A decent machinist vise comes in very handy on the drill press. Not inexpensive though.

I used to have a good bit for milling and it was for my Dremel. It was the drill bit style milling bit and it made the job easy. I wish I knew which one it was though because I have tried others with no luck. Anyone know what works best?

My drill press doesn't run fast enough to use a milling bit. It grabs too easy even when plunge drilling most of it out. The cheap Harbor Freight stops pull the spindle to the side slightly when you bottom out which also can cause the bit to grab the block. I resorted to sticking to a router with a 1/4" straight bit. I usually have to spend some time with a razor blade cleaning the pockets to get my cubes to fit but I can get the routing done pretty quick.

I tried all kinds of ways to mill a pocket without a mill and concluded I just didn't have the skill.. Ended up getting a HF mini mill and with coupon think it was less than $500 (not cheap but not out of reach either). It's a pretty good tool.

This was my first year attempting to make weight pockets of this style. I used a Dremel with a "196 Dremel High Speed Cutter" bit. Holding the car in one hand, and the Dremel in the other. Then used a file to "crispen" the corners. Pretty happy with the results.

Just curious do you have a pic of the front of the car also, or a whole car pic? I want to see how you went from thin center back up around the front wheels and how you did the front of the car.

These are the three that we built this year. 1/8" center sections, with a 1/4" rear on the cubed car, and 3/16" rears on the canopy cars.
