New Great Lakes Field Service Council rules for 2019

Question about these rules.

These rules seem to make it illegal to remove any material from the inside of the tread.

Now it seems that I would need to add weight to the 'light' side of the wheel, rather than scrap some material from the 'heavy' side, which makes the overall weight of the wheel greater.

Is there a better way, under these rules, to balance the wheels? This is new to me, but my scout will be racing under these rules next year and I want to get it right.

You don't want to add weight. that is never good.

You might buy extra sets of wheels so you can find some of the preferred molds. These are wheels that have less runout and smaller bores. Match them up so you have consistency in the wheels on your car.

I know that there are mold numbers on the back of the wheels, but I have yet (in my very limited experience) been able to determine which molds may be better, or worse, than others.

Are there mold numbers that are known to be better than others?

2, 7, 15 are some of my favorites. If you have to run stock wheels, the #15 mold generally has less than 0.002" of runout and it is a lighter wheel than the other molds.

Rule 5.3 axles may not be smaller than .084 at any point where it may touch the wheel.
I measured some spares that are untouched out of the kit box and they measure .085 between the crimp mark. So this rule is allowing scouts .001 of metal removal to polish their axles. I would expect that most cars will be disqualified under this rule if the scouts polish and de-crimp their own axles.

Holy cow, I thought our rules were strict! Those are terrifying.

Good luck getting none of my wheels off. I’m scared of one coming out, so I glue them til there is no chance. I have been known to super glue, Elmer’s glue and a dot of epoxy those things permanently in!

Since letting the kids do the axles, may not work, I started looking into having to buy some axles (I have never had to do that before). The DD4H scout replacements have a slight bevel on the head which violates rule 5.4 which disallows any axle head that does not appear square to the shaft.
So I got the following information from Maximum Velocity

Technical Information
Shaft Diameter: 0.0850 inch ± 0.001 (BSA: 0.088 ± 0.002)

They sell one that is .085 +- .001 which just barely fits the rule (exactly). It is also the only reference to BSA specs I could find, which are apparently .088 +- .002. Also, don't dare start using any polish that may reduce the diameter.

It seems that it takes precision machinery to meet the requirements of the New Great Lakes Council Rules. Good luck scouts. Have fun.

If your Pack has its own track I suggest making a more sensible set of rules, hosting your own race for everyone in the area and then not charge anything. This way when nobody shows up at the District Race they will start to wonder why.

"Please clarify rule 5.7 and the tool interface. Bubblegum". I read no slot for screwdriver style tuning.

That was where I was going because bent axles are allowed in 5.10.

You can pull and twist using pliers but that has potential damage issues as well.

Hey Mojo - I have never gotten much into comparing wheel molds much yet but I made note of your recommendations and just was helping my bro - in law with his twins cars and each kit had a #15 wheel so I thought great - I will used those on the two rears for one of the cars and try to match some others for the other car but when I looked at the #15 s the outer hub was awful - pits and defected plastic everywhere - do you just clean these up or is this just with the newest molds that are having this problem? Feel like it is significant enough to not try and clean these up with sandpaper and try and get the hubs into worthwhile condition. Will be using them for the raised wheels haha

5.7 does this mean no tuning groove on the DFW? that's a bummer.
6.1 Still stuck in the 80's, no oil? I don't race scouts but I thought it was legal in some areas.
