Do you guys set the bend to barely fit through the wheel with out scratching? I know this was common practice and I do it but just wondering if it works for those who do it?

I only bend my rear axles now days!!!

Yes and it works great! Make sure the bending grooves edges are polished to prevent scratching the wheel bore. Cut the grooves first then polish the axle, this smooths the cut edge of the groove while polishing, so no extra steps involved.

I bend mine to about 6 degrees now, it's just under where it's hard to ge in bore, but like Paul said, polish those grooves too.

Somebody (Kinser?) said that it's okay if you nick your bores a little inserting the highly-bent DFW, provided that you're using a grooved axle, because the speed-groove will end up over the nicked area anyhow.

Or something like that.

I have read that too, but for me, if I nick a wheel bore, it becomes the NDFW or trash, depending on the class. I would only consider using a wheel with a imperfect bore if I had no other choice.

Ya, it was probably me. At one time I had an axle that had to be popped through the bore. The car was a winner and set track records. I don't do it anymore. It didn't scratch the bore. If I have a scratch or nic in the middle of the bore I don't care, that's where the lube groove on the axle is. The axle just touches the outside edges of the wheel bore.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but Bulldog's post reminded me of the great job Brian-561 Racing did staging the scout oil cars at the Mid America Nationals this year. I was very impressed.
Thanks again Brian!
