Ok guys we had our pack race today and finished second to a oil car. Thanks for all the help and advice, and products from DD4H. Our pack race is next weekend and I would like to switch to oil I'm going to order new axles from dd4h with his oil prep my question is can I reprep my wheels for oil after running graphite? No! Graphite particles are imbedded in the plastic wheelbore. Get new wheels. You could do it, but it wouldn't be as effective.
I came across this thread after my son and I already prepped his 1.5 gram DD4H wheels with graphite and raced. He ran at districts yesterday and finished 3rd overall. The two faster cars were running oil I think and we should have as well. The rules called for a "dry lubricant", but did not call for graphite only.
So, I can't afford to buy another set of wheels for his scout car. And we will be running it in open scout class at mid America next month. And will be using oil.
What is the best way to safely remove as mush graphite from the bore as possible.
Should we re polish the bores? I plan to order johns dual stage polishing kit.
I know its not ideal but we need to make the best of it. Re prepped with oil done right should still be faster than running straight graphite right? Even after burnishing the bores with graphite?
We burnished in Hodges graphite with walgreens q tip shaft, then added maxV. Car ran 4 heats at district.

The best I suppose would be to repolish. I don't think you'll get all the graphite out and I've never done a repolish. You most likely will not get all the graphite scratches out, and don't over do it. You can wreck the wheels by over working them. The best would still be a new set of wheels.
I would do the following,
1st I would blow the wheel out and as clean as possible with air. Then clean thoroughly with soap (dish soap) and water. Rinse extremely well. Compress air dry. Soak in 91% alcohol , clean bores with alcohol soaked fluffy pipe cleaner. air dry with compressed air. Use the #2 polish and re-prep. It's not a perfect method but any method you use the key is cleaning out as much old graphite as possible. It is always recommended to use new wheels.
