Old school thinking..

So my wheels and axles are prepped with Johns stuff. I'm about to install them in the car. Back in the day before we installed axles we put graphite in each side of the wheel bore and tapped it in and spun a few rounds. Is this still the case or do I need to just install and run? We have to use graphite by the way and I used pledge.

A lot of folks like to burnish graphite into the bores with a polished rod, rolling it around inside with steady pressure. I think the underlying theory is that this forces graphite into any low spots in your bores, and also crushes the graphite to a smaller size.

If you search this forum for burnishing, you'll find plenty of how-tos.

Thanks. I did burnish the wheel bore. Any possibility of having too much graphite?

Speaking of old school...check out my first car

Most of the opinion I see seems to be that you graphite, graphite, graphite and then graphite some more. Be sure to spin the wheels so that loose stuff drops out.

Looking nice! Very vintage.

561 I think I have been over graphing. I say that because after we race I pull the wheel and there is big clumps of graphite in the wheel bore. I backed off this car. We will see how it does.

Thanks VK. That car is 30 years old.

Just spin the wheels good, should give you 8-9 good runs. First run or two it kicks out the excess and starts to peak.

Yes you can have too much graphite and it will slow your car down. What I've always done with graphite and I hate graphite, but we will first burnish graphite into the bore, twice. After that, we'll insert the axle into the bore. Before we mount it, we'll tap graphite in the outter hub under the axle head and give it a couple good spins. We'll the turn it over and do the same for the inner hub. After that, we'll blow the excess graphite off, clean up the outside and you're good to go. Common mistakes people make is, they'll add more graphite before the race and just spin it a couple times. This will slow you down. If possible, run the car twice before the race and leave it.

If you see actual clumps I'd be concerned that you're getting too much moisture from the Pledge. Try letting it dry up more before you assemble.

NFS, when I first glanced at your car I thought of Speed Buggy... Roger-Dodger! It must have been the roll bar.

Great looking build!
