Peoples choice awards, needs some ideas...

First off, let me introduce myself...

I am a second year cubscout den leader, with an eight year old wolf son. Last month was my second year to build cars for pinewood derby. I am a woodworking hobbyist but haven't learned how to make a fast car. I've got the pretty part down.

Now for my post...

Traditionally, we like to let our scouts vote for thier favorite car. We've always given each scout a ticket and placed a solo cup in front of each car. They would place thier ticket in a cup to vote for thier favorite car.

This year, in efforts to streamline the race a bit, I built a wooden rack that will hold 90 cars. This completely complicates the cup systom as there isn't space for a cup.

Does anyone have any ideas how to tally votes for a people's choice award, that would work well with this staging system?

Seems like each car has an assigned number, cant you just write the number of the car you are voting for on a ticket and place them in a ballot box or bucket?

I had thought about that. Guess they could write thier number on thier ticket with a sharpie. Then I'd take a little longer to tally the votes.

Wasn't sure if anyone else would have a faster way of doing it.

We have then write the car number on a ballot, then put it in a box. It does complicate the tally process, so I have to count a couple times throughout the event to keep up. I have a roster pre-printed with their car numbers to make it quicker to find thier names.

Our numbers are pre-determined, so there's gaps for kids that don't attend the derby. Yours looks sequential based on who shows up. Maybe still having a roster and then you write the number they end up being? Anyway, the roster helped a lot. First year we did voting I didn't have it and it was very complicated tallying from scratch.

Guess I’m a little confused. Why not just have numbered cups? Each car is assigned their own number on the rack. Just line up cups with numbers on them and kids can drop their tickets in the cup correlated with the cars number on the rack.

Nah, that's to easy, haha!

We use a ballot box and just write the numbers of the cars, then count them up.

And besides... According to the song, this is not what Red Solo Cups are supposed to be used for. LOL

We use a ballot system as well. All the kids vote right before the race once all cars are checked in. Once the race has started someone who is not involved with running the race sits down and counts. We announce the winner at the end. I see how adding a roster could help speed up as well

You are correct. We assign numbers as the cars are registered the day of the race.

The point of eliminating the cups, is a space issue. To lay out eighty cups on a separate table can get confusing for the kids. Previously we had a car on a table with a cup directly in front of each car. We tied up several tables with this system. With the new rack in place, it's much easier for the race helpers to locate and race each car as they come up. Just trying to streamline things to make the race move along faster.

Thanks. I enjoy playing in the wood shop. The rack turned out really good. The guy who runs our district race saw a pic of it on my Facebook. He's has since used it for his pack race and plans to use it again next month for our district race.

We have NO VOTING......we use JUDGES. When we have our Pack Race(we only have about 30 show up) we will ask a school teacher or church Deacon to be the judge....when we do District Race at the local mall we will go ask various workers at the shops to be judges.

We have selected judges as well. The people's choice is just an added award we like to give. It's neat to see what the kids like. It's just them voting on the cars they built.

We have an image of each Scouts car on a slideshow on a computer with their numbers. Through out the race day, kids watch the slideshow, find their favorite and drop a ballot in a box. Works well as the Sxluts choice is always a cool looking car! Takes up
Minimal space. Your rack is MUCH cooler. Helps see what they look like up close! Wouldn’t work for our pack because the lock the cars up til they race so no one can touch or modify them.
