I want to thank all of you for your prayers and support over the past week.
Here are the details of what happened:
I live in the southwest suburbs of Denver in the Columbine area of Littleton, Colorado. My home is almost exactly 500 miles to John’s (i.e. DD4H). When I drove over to Utah, I drove on I70 thru Vail, Grand Junction, and in Utah: thru Green River, Price and then onto Sarasota Springs (where John lives).
Normally I can make the trip in 7+ hours. However, on the way over, there were at least 10 places where road work was occurring, requiring all cars into a single lane for long stretches. So I decided to take the longer route home (i.e. 50 miles longer). The longer route is pure freeway from John’s home to my own home.
After the NPWDRL event was over, I stayed an extra day, and went to Church with my oldest 2 children (who live about 15 miles east of DD4H). So I left for home at noon on Sunday.
The crash occurred within 25 miles of my home, so I was then inside of familiar territory. My memory of the crash is dead. I remember looking overhead at a road sign that showed I was almost home. To me, I have no memory of anything that happened in the next 5 minutes. The next thing I remember is hearing one Highway Patrol man talking to another:
HWPatrol 1: Come and help me open this door, then we can get to the body.
HWPatrol 2: Is he alive?
HWP1: I don’t think so, but there doesn’t seem to be any blood anywhere.
Screeching as door opened.
OPA: What’s going on here? What happened? Where am I?
HWP1: How bad is your pain between 1 and 10
OPA: I don’t have any pain, but my right leg is caught in something.
HWP1: You were in an accident. You ran into a stalled 18 wheeler.
OPA: So who’s fault is it, his or mine?
HWP1: You are completely in the clear. His truck lost all of its electricity and stalled in the fast lane. Do you remember hitting him?
OPA: No, the only thing I remember before seeing you was looking at the sign saying Federal Blvd exit.
HWP!: Apparently you had no time to hit the brakes, because all we can find are tire marks indicating that you made a severe left had turn. That sudden turn saved your life. The rear of the truck’s trailer tore off the entire top of your car’s roof on the passenger side.
I think the Lord was with me. I tried to talk my wife into coming with me. AND SoGone (Dave London) had to cancel out at the last minute, thus I was alone on this trip. IF either one of them had been with me, whoever was in the passenger seat would not have lived through it.
Many years ago, when I was about 17 years old, I got a special blessing from a holy man, who in our church we call a Patriarch. This blessing was recorded, and I still have a copy today. In one of the paragraphs, I was told that the Destroyer (Luther) would not be allowed to take my life until I had completed my work on the earth.
So they took me to the Hospital, put me thru CT, MRI, and X-Rays. And there was not one bone broken. But I feel pain from the chest up to the top of my head. But the right side of my body is entirely black and blue, probably like and NFL lineman after a hard hitting game.
This occurred on Sunday night. They kept me in the Hospital until Friday noon to monitor the right side of my body. Also they put me on a blood thinner to help the right side of my body heal. However, the next day the pain began in earnest. But it has gradually subsided over the last two days. Today is the first time I was able to use my computer.
I was released on Friday, and told my wife I wanted to see the damaged car. Attached are a couple of photos:
I will post the photos in another email, after I figure out how to do it.
