Prep for oil

The race I'm in allows for stock axles only which are considerably smaller than the stock wheel bore. Is it more important to maintain proper clearances between bore n axle or to remove surface imperfections that would impede the hydrodynamic properties when using oil? I assume both are critical.
Thanks J.

If you're stuck using stock axles there's not much you can do about the clearances. I buy a tube of Chinese made BSA wheels, throw away the wheels, and use those axles with USA made BSA wheels. The Chinese axles don't have as many imperfections to remove. Sand lightly, don't take off any more than you have to. Are you allowed to modify the stock axles? If you are, bevel the underside of the head with a file and turn down the head of the axle enough that it won't rub in the counterbore of the wheel.

What about using these? http://www.shop.derbydad4hire.com/BSA-Official-Speed-Axles-A-BSA.htm

Get the DD4H DVD and follow it for oil. If you are allowed to use modded wheels with your rules BY ALL MEANS DO IT.

Thanks. I will be buying the dd video. I should have mentioned its a Pinecar kit not BSA but I mod the wheels to the max and I tool the axles as well. The kit includes the one piece axle as well which is closer to a "92" than the nails but would not properly allow me to make a "runner". As I have the block and a bent DFW I started to think if I would have such a sloppy fit that oil may not be better. It seems like I lose the benefit of oil if I do alleviate surface imperfections which lead me to question how effective oil can be with sloppy tolerances. Thanks for your thoughts.

DD4H is definately a genious...cut the axle... I love it!!! Also, I do believe that no matter the tolerance, in this application...oil will beat graphite everytime. the wheel is still going to make contact with the axle and will still have some friction and DD oil process will make you very happy...best of luck to you!!!

Thanks boys. I will definitely put one together as such and send it down. I can only enter one car but will bring three or four in to run before qualifying time and compare. Have you guys had luck using the ptfe products to build up the axle diameter or should I just wait to watch the video and then ask questions?

Are you still using the plastic cap to hold the wheel in place when using the one piece axles.

Make sure you have extra caps for your axles. A couple of years ago a guy ran those at our pack race and lost one, no one had anything that would work to hold his wheel on and his night was done.

For the DFW axle are you bending as you would for a standard axle? This was my plan for our next pinecar race. In the past, I used a coping saw to cut one front wheel slot deeper to raise NDFW. ( just ran three touch, no cant or steer. was going to drill a hole perpendicular to the front axle, on the bottom, to tune it. Also, With a cut axle, it would be a lot easier to control wheel gap. My worry would be if the rules stated "Must use one piece axles" someone would sure to call foul.

They're in the kit. There's usually 5. When i'm doing several cars, I leave the extras on one stick ( they come on a stick) so they are all together.

Thanks again for the help and the encouragement. It's awesome to be able to get a question out to the right set of ears. Hats off to you boys.
