Gulfport Ms.
So here's the central nerveous system of Billy's plan for the revolutionary, Red Neck Axle Bender. For you old skoolers the larger socket looking thing with a pointed nose is known as a drag link socket. They come in mostly 1/2" drive but i think there available in 3/8". And hopefully errbody knows what the small screwdriver socket is and is usually available in 3/8 and 1/4" drive and the C clamp is.....well a C clamp. SPOILER ALERT !! if you don't know what either of them are and how to use them, please put your hands in the air and slowly back away from the key board or put your phone in your pocket or go play angry birds !! Billy envisions choosing the right sized C clamp without the swivel head and probably the smaller screwdriver socket as a press or break. Of course score the axle as see seen on the DD4H video on how to bend an axle without a bender. Billy's next step would involve a soft piece of wood maybe a squared cube or something easy to handle without much fumbling around. Router out a groove or use a drill bit on its side to grind out the groove starting at the edge and going across the cube just deep enough to keep the axle from rolling sideways. Lay the scored and polished axle in the groove with the polished area and the head sticking out the side of the cube. Then mark the cube and cut a groove slightly deeper that will cross the 1st groove at the point where you want the bend. Place the small C clamp bald head inside the socket, position the cube so when clamped the screwdriver point will engage the axle at the point of bend and commence the controlled, stop when you want too clamping action of the C clamp. The key to the puzzle is matching the right sized non swivel shafted C clamp with the right size drive socket and of course the correct groove locations and depth on the cube. Now you don't have to worry about hitting the axle too much or not enough and having to wack it again which is where Billy ususally screws up. A visual and controlled pressure on the axle and a bend as much or little as you'd like. Suggestions/recommendations encouraged except for the guy that will say "what an idiot, just spend the money and buy a dad gum bender fool". Anyone can do that but what fun would that be ? I know it's clear as mud but this has been a free public service announcement.
