Redrilling Axle Holes

Need some help. What happen was the axle holes were tight so I used a reamer to free up the axle holes. We'll all was good for a while, but after a few races and re-prep's they are loose. I've tried dental floss, and water to tighten them up but no joy. So I'm looking at re-drilling the axle holes. What is best to use for filling the axle holes and re-drilling.

No experience here, just an idea. You could try jamming some round toothpicks in there with some glue... For me though, I'm making a new body and I know that is NOT what you wanted to hear.

Are you sure you're getting a water drop in there? It won't go in on it's own. Put your finger in water, while holding your finger downward let a drop form on it and set it on the axle hole. With the water drop covering the hole tap on it to force it in and then blow it in the rest of the way. Let the car sit with no axles in it for a day and try it then. I have never had it not work even when I drilled with a bit that was one size to big, it worked perfectly.

I did this once and it worked. I used thin CA on the toothpicks first to stiffen them. Then I used epoxy as the glue on the insert. I also drilled the new holes just slightly in front of, or behind the original holes, i.e. about half was in the original location, and half was in new wood.

What works for me is do like Kinser said to get the drop of water on top of the hole, take it a step further and dunk a round toothpick into water, give it a light shake and press it in the hole twisting it around, compressing the water into the pores of the wood. You can actually feel the resistance increase on the toothpick from the wood swelling. Works like a champ for me but the wood species has a lot to do with it too I "wood" imagine.

*Update-

Thinking about Kinsers method, it makes more sense by letting the water soak into the wood like a sponge and swell naturally to grab the axle. Next time my axle holes get gourded out, I'll give er a go./images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif
