Roll Test ? Using Goatboy Drill Fixture

After numerous wood blanks (Poplar and flat pieces) drilled using a #43 bit and Goatboy (w inserts) the backwards roll test is consistently good but the forward is not acceptable. Verified dedicated prepped roll test wheels and axles / pin gauges are good with a good block passsing the forward & backwards roll test.

I hear the drill bit may be the issue & have new carbide and HSS bits ordered.
Will new HSS bits perform as well as new carbide? I hear the carbide will wear the GB inserts and can cause issues after a while of use.
Which bit do most pros use with the GB drill fixture and do you see the roll test fail after so many drills?

Appreciate any other feedback to resolve and get consistent + forward & backward roll tests.

Not sure what you mean by goat boy (with inserts) I use the drill bits he provided. You definitely need good drill bits. I have had 0 problems with it using a hand drill.

I was having fits for a while just as you described. I prepped the wheels i test with as i would for a race but did not add oil or jig. After I did my testes with prepped wheels the results were different. Much more consistent and the wheels migrated nice. I have drilled a lot of bodies and my jig and bit are still good. I would first prep your wheels you are testing with, dedicate those wheels to testing roll, keep dust out of them and you'll know when your drill is good and won't second guess your test wheels and axles. Good luck man!

What brand, size and material (carbide, carbon steel,, etc.) and drill tip works best with the GB jig?

Thanks
