Nothing ties more to scouts than Pinewood Derby and Popcorn. Scout dues are rather expensive now a days with national dues, insurance and other money going towards the cars and other things throughout the year. Do any of you dad's have any other ideas for fundraisers? I was thinking about having a "Challenge a Scout" Pinewood Derby race where entry is $10 or $5 per car and open to anyone. Our pack has a 35' Best Track we could use so really the event wouldnt cost the pack anything. What do you guys think and if you have any other ideas, shoot them my way please.

We have a dad and lad cake bake. Decorative cakes award trophies then we auction them off. We raised 1,100 dollars this year.

We did the father/son cake auction when we kids. This year we had the kids decorate cakes during the Blue and Gold to auction that night. The cakes were donated by the store that ruined America.

I had suggested the same thing - that is, have an open race to the public, not just the scouts, to raise money. There are many people I bump into that would gladly drop $5+ dollars to race a car. It all comes down to the volunteers you are able to muster up, or lack there of. That is our stumbling block. That and advertising...

It keeps the scouts building and improving with each build, hopefully causing a little more competion within the pack. It also allows older scouts to compete as they did when they were cubs. It seems like many hundreds could be raised, but there is that volunteer thing that always looms overhead...

I dont think volunteers would be hard to come by. We have about 9 Den Leaders plus parents that could help out. I find it hard to believe bake sales are making that much money. I just dont see that doing well for us.

Our pack sells TJ's pizzas as a fundraiser twice a year. The pizzas are really good and very reasonable so they sell very well. No problem getting friends and coworkers to buy. 40-50% margins.

We don't do popcorn, since we felt it was overpriced.

Our old Pack only sells popcorn, with the 'show and sell' (pre-buy, what is on the wagon always sells first). It worked. They made enough to afford expenses of about $100/Scout/year.

Others around here sell popcorn and wreaths and some also kringles. The Packs that I know of doing the best fundraising get time slots at local stores or gas stations and sell a ton at those places. I think that is a great way to go because not that many families want to do the door-to-door. One family I know of took their popcorn with them to sell on the street to people walking into the local profesional baseball park. In like an hour they sold all of their allotted popcorn.

That's pretty much how the mid America derby started. Was a way to have a fundraiser for the local pack and blew up to what it is today.

I can promise you the bake sales do very well. my sis in-law made a big post on FB about it. When we lived in a different pack we went to a bake sale and some of the items went for far more than what my sis in-law sold hers for. It's always better when you get the mothers involved, they get into it and want it to do well for their son's. The mothers will have all kinds of people their and they'll volunteer to make the baked goods. /images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif

I'm not trying to put you off of the Derby thing. I just think you'll make more money for the effort. IMO

CAKE BAKE I Promise guys !!

You invite grand paw, grand mother. Even our local chemical salesmen came by. Boy did they help out. Its a win win. Something to eat and raise money.

we have a city fair and the Boy Scouts had a water balloon sling shot / Catapult and you shoot water balloons at each other ... It raised 250.00 in 2 days... after the 75.00 fee for the space was paid for.. We even had Donation jars... This year we were asked to do a Long Shot compition but the boys will be in Bartles that weekend...

Papa V that's a real cool idea. Little cool for water here but in june that would b great. Might look into that at our local festival.
