The lil' cub and I participated in districts this past weekend. At the end, I was showing a few loiters how I build and tune a car (scary in itself since I don't know what I'm doing), but in this case, I had access to a Freedom Track/Timer. I can only say you can only learn so much on a tuning board; I was able to gain .07 seconds on my open class car just adjusting the drift and a little track time, which is a ton of time. Obviously, this car is not as well made as most of them are here.

In any case, I wanted to purchase a single lane test track from Besttrack; however, I can not seem to contact them through phone number from the web site or the email address. Do they normally respond within 24hrs or check messages weekly or so? I was hoping to have something before mid-america, so I could send something in that could be considered "respectable."

Nevermind, just got a call.

12 days to make, 3 days to ship. Need to touch base with Microwizard...

Believe it or not, a lot of the top racers dont have a test track. granted that will help, but I would say send the car in anyway. That's what I'm going to do with my sons pinewood derby car. I know it wont get first b/c I know what I did wrong, but he'll love watching it on the computer.

Without a doubt, I'm planning on sending a car in. I will not win either, but its the thrill of the race. Why I can get so obcessed over a block of wood, 4 nails, and some plastic wheels is beyond my understanding.

But...

I got the test track ordered and it should be here 5 or 6 days before I have to mail the car away. Maybe it will help me not to be too embasseded; then again, my co-workers think I'm a loon anyway.

You should have seen the look on my wife's face when I said I was hoping to have the track start in the living room, cross through the front foyer, and finally end in the office, with the front door being off limits for entering/exiting the house. It was priceless...

My wife is gonna flip when I run it through the downstairs and into the garage /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif. Especially since we have a mouse.

My wife was not surprised at all when I told it would run through the living room. The only thing is asked was "will it be there all the time?" Of course I had to reply NO! Other than this, she has been very supportive of my involvement with this hobby.

Put a little cheese at the finish line and race him

Somewhere on this forum is a picture of my 42' test track. Permanently set up in the basement, but the basement is all finished and carpeted. The track goes through three rooms. At first my wife didn't want any visitors to go downstairs. But the word got around, and many of the husbands looked at it longingly. Then it becomes an hour long conversation between the men and their wives. Wonder of wonders! My wife now likes it, mostly because it creates quite a conversation piece.

Just got it

All that I can say is this could be almost as important as a drill press / Silver bullet. I was able to shave several hundreds of a second off my time just with a little tuning. For the pro builders, it may not help as much, but for any novice builder such as myself, I do not have to wait and send a car in to see my results. It is instant feedback.

Damn... I thought I had a shot at winning this month...

It ain't over 'til it's over! The post office has the final say on how fast his car is!

Good luck you two!

How much $$$$ do one of these test tracks run?

Click on the Best Track link on the top left of the page. A great timer can cost just as much as a track and then a electronic starting gate. I'm guessing $700-$800 for top notch stuff. I don't look at them because I don't have room for one and I don't want to start "Jonesing" for one!
