How much could a guy do to make a car run better in middle lanes that does not mean as much in the outside lanes? Wheel wind shields?

Yeah it seems to be at least partly related to how the air from the other cars is affecting your car. And this varies depending on which cars you are running against (faster or slower, stable or wiggling). The hardest part is it is not really something you can test for at home at least with a single car running on it's own.

I meant to try a shroud / wind shield for the DFW this past race but didn't get to it.

Tough thing there too. Depending on how you do it, you can easily just be creating a sail and catching more air as opposed to deflecting it.

I totally understand. It seems like you'd want to get it recessed in the wheel cavity a tad bit.
