Okay, my son's car won the Cub division and Pack today, 3rd year straight. /images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif

As usual, I cut out the car, do the weight, and he polishes his axles and wheel bores.

This year, we used plastic polish, a Q-tip, then Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid Polish. Looked real slick. It said it was their "most hydropobic wax ever", or something like that.

Then burnished with graphite. Hob E Lube.

These are BSA wheels. Not sure what the axles were, a friend gave me a bag of old stuff, and I liked them because they had no crimp marks. They were about .086-ish after polishing. (old set of calipers with a dial gauge)
I thought he left too many scratches on them, but it was HIS work.

Car is 4 wheels, rail runner. 1 wheel BARELY touches, other front axle bent slightly for steering. Rears are canted.

So he won...but not by as much as I had expected. Our pack has an old, old homemade track.
I have a Piantedosi 2 lane wood track. Much smoother than the old 1983 model Eagle Scout project track the Pack uses. I thought it performed pretty well on that one.

Now maybe everyone's car is just that much better this year because we held a build day and told them some of the tricks everyone here already knows....but I'm not feeling super good about his chances at District.

So....IF I were to maybe look into a few DD4H products for some quick speed, what? We have to run graphite. I know about the deal where you run oil and smudge graphite on the body and wheels, but am not going to do it.
What, then? Wheels? Axles? Re-do our current wheels with some Red Rocket and DD4H's graphite? Would any of that really be THAT much better than what we have already?

If so, where is the best "bang for the buck", so to speak? Which one or two quick upgrades would make the most difference? This is, of course, ASSuming John isn't so covered up that he could get us this stuff before we turn in the car next Friday.

Have you read the post on using Pledge on the axles when using graphite? That would be something I'd try but I sure would want to be able to run it on a track to make sure it was faster than what you're currently doing before racing it like Kinser said.

Yep, I used Pledge. Been reading the thread about that for awhile.

Here's everything we did:
Polished axles up to 3000 grit. Then Brasso with leather. Then Pledge.

Polished wheel bores with Q-tip and plastic polish. Then the wax. Then burnished with a Q-tip.

Just wondering if re-prepping with Red Rocket would be worth it, or how much we might gain with maybe new wheels and/or axles......

What Q-tips were you using? I bought the Wal-Greens Q-Tips and they didnt fit in my wheel bores...

I have some I got at a dollar store. They are slightly too small, but I found they quickly expand when they get wet with the polish. Then they are nice and snug, but don't harm the bore.
I do use the Walgreens Q's for burnishing, since there is no liquid to expand the shaft. If it is too tight, I sand it down a bit.

I bought a box of the Studio 35 brand swabs at Walgreens. About half of the 375 swabs in the box were too big for me to want to use. The rest were fine. Did you measure them all? Do you cut the heads off at an angle? If you cut them straight they won't fit in the bore.

I bought the same ones. Yes I cut them at an angle. Maybe I just didn't try enough. Gave up after a few.

Maybe so. I went through the whole box with a dial caliper and sorted out the ones I could use, then gave the rest to the wife.

I chuck em up and hit em with 600+ grit. This makes em smoother too.

I do it, too, with 800.

I agree that some of the Walgreen Q's are too big.

I still like my dollar store Q's for the plastic polish. I put some polish in the bore, then on the stem. Put the wheel over the Q and spin it. The wait about 30 seconds, and the stem swells up and gets nice and snug, then I polish it.

Now: In my cart at DD4H I have: Red Rocket, graphite, bore polish #1, and a set of Dynasty Rage wheels.
I'm itching to pull the trigger on this stuff.

Based on what we've done so far, what realistic improvement could I expect over what we have now?
which is:
Out of box wheels
Bores polished with Novus (it's actually Dwx crap, but I assume it's just Novus)
Waxed with Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid Polish
Hob E Lube

Will the RR and the Rage's be a noticeable upgrade, anyone think?

Nice pic! Congratulations on the win!

I believe you will see an improvement with the Dynasty Rage wheels over the stock "out-of-the-box" BSA wheel. The Rage wheels will be concentric to the wheel bore and slightly lighter, for a quicker start. The Red Rocket and DD4H graphite are all proven components to a winning package. You will not be hurting anything by using this upgrade.

Thanks!

As you can see, our track is a bit rough. I call it 'the great equalizer'. Cars going down it are VERY noisey.

The District track is very nice, though. Still wood, but it's 6 lane and you can hardly hear the cars run on it.

Okay, then. You guys think it'll make that much difference? I knew about the fenders, and watched John's video of a car with and without, but didn't realize the arrow hole would hurt us much. But at District, I guess every little bit helps.

I believe District is about a 32 foot track, for what it's worth.
