I would assume there is a reason for this but why isn't a teardrop shaped body used among the top cars? I've been able to build a ladder like body covered with very thin cut pine (less that 1/16 inch) that weights less than 0.5 ounces. While its not a perfect teardrop I did use half a 3/16 dowel for the front and tapered the area behind the rear wheels together. Any thoughts on this design idea?

Years ago - before I discovered this site - I experimented with this. Ultimately, it will result in you putting more weight towards the front of the car which is the opposite of what you want. The car is gaining momentum while it's on the ramp, and slowing down while it's on the flat. So, having more weight at the back of the car is going to keep that weight on the ramp longer which is going to give your car more momentum/speed on the flat. That far outweighs any benefits your car will get from the more aerodynamic tear drop shape.
