Test track built - now I just need some cars to race on it and in the upcoming fire series race....

I'm sure the wife loves that.

Nicely built though.

ZigZag, I just completed the same thing last month. Now, I'm just trying to build and learn as much as I can.

That is really cool, I wish I had that kind of space for my track...Dad gum it!! Every room I have too small, including the garage!

Do you have two rooms that would accomodate a track? Notch a hole in the wall man! Put a plant in front of the hole when the track is down. Your wife wouldn't mind, would she?

Funny you say that...I have talked about just that. The problem is it would have to go through 2 of the kidses rooms and it would stop right in the middle of the floor of my daughters room...Normally not a big deal but the kids are 5 and 6 and lord only knows what they would find to do to the track??? Hmmm I need to go measure...???

Very nice! How long and tall is your track? Did you build it from a plan? What are you doing for a start gate and a timer?

Track is 32 ft long - I haven't made the starting gate yet and still need to build the track stand - but I think 48in or so is roughly the standard height.

I can run two cars between the rails (super track style - which is what my daughter's pack uses) and two on the rails (best track style). I also need to figure out what to do for a timer - but figured I would build a few cars and then decide how much value I was getting out of the track.

I got the general idea for the track from the site linked below. I used an 8ft piece of PVC trim as a spacer which made it really easy to line up all the rails and transition from one section of track to the next.

Were you able to find 3/16" wallboard? I've looked for that stuff, but can only find it in 1/8" thickness.

Local Home Depot just started carrying 3/16 mdf board. When I first thought about building the track I was in the same boat and couldn't find anything suitable in the 3/16 - 1/4 inch range.

My wife just putt me on a spending freeze.

I'm lucky in that I just buy stuff when I feel I can afford it and I won't have a bad feeling about parting with the money. When I look back at all the stuff I've accumulated throughout the years, it adds up to quite a bit. From the track and timer to the drill presses and lathe and sanders all the way to the wheels axles and tungsten, entry fees and shipping costs, I don't think I want to know how much I've spent. Now with the podcasting equipment, which is probably at least another $600 (so far) I probably could have purchased a pretty decent vehicle to drive...but I keep that ol' mini van that I've had for over a dozen years (no car payment is actually pretty nice.) But all in all, this is by comparison a very cheap hobby. If you don't go nuts and try to buy everything at once, you really don't feel like you're spending all that much. My wife said it best one time "It could be worse... you could be spending all of your time and money in a bar somewhere"

Somebody told my wife that same thing, once, Zeebzob... At least I am not spending all my money in a bar...

She responded... "It would be cheaper if he were in a bar... but at least here, he has something to show for it."

I got a laugh out of that.

So true Guys, I love the fact that I work an honest living and I go home tired and can look in the mirror and be happy I treated my customers right. This is how I feel about PWD, hell yes I love it and yes I would rather build cars then a lot of other bad stuff I could be doing as a grown man. Thanks guys, Hurricrane, I think shes playing mind voodo, LOL

That's true guys! My wife has uttered those same words. She'd rather see me at home, safe and sound. Now... my pinewood derby expenses are very similar to my addiction to having the right tools and the best equipment for the job. And for anyone else in the automotive repair world, you know what I'm talking about. Having the right tools for the job certainly makes things easier and more efficient. Sure it can be done with other tools, but it's hard to beat the right tool. I see many similarities between the two. But in pinewood, I don't have a tool truck that rolls up weekly flashing all the latest pinewood tools and stuff like in the automotive world. Thank goodness! My shop at home is well outfitted with dual purpose tools... in most cases. Shhh.... don't tell my wife otherwise. LOL
