There is a huge difference in the quietness of wide wheels on my track depending on whether I run them open side in or out, especially if I have thinned the tread to lighten them. If I run the rears canted with the open side out they will ride on the stiffer part of the wheel. If I run with the open side in (the thin part of the tread in contact with the track) they will be much quieter but slower because the deflection of the thinner tread will absorb the vibration and noise. I believe running this way deflects the running surface and this takes energy thus slowing the car. My cars running this way are so quiet I can hardly hear them, but the times are slower.
