I tried something like that with my dremel and a drill bit, burned up the wood a ill but got the job done, like this one. Not as clean as this process, but close. I actually bought a router attachment for my dremel, so I should be ok.

Question for the 1/4" car guys. Do you basically route out through the car then add your 1/16th or 1/32nd piece over the top and bottom?

That's the ticket. But make sure you use slow cure CA glue and clamp. First time I ever did this with 5 sec cure and the plywood wasn't centered--arrgh!

I use a 1/32 pressure sensitive veneer that you can buy at woodworking stores. It is pre-glued, no mess. Easy as putting on a sticker.

I also recommend an air compressor with an inline air filter and desiccant. Canned air gets expensive after a while.

I have a miter saw, drill press and a dremel... Missing anything? A must have?

This is the one I have and am very happy with it. Its not a Laguna or a Grizzly but for the price point its got features the more expensive brands have like ball bearing guides and a fence. And it survived a pwd workshop with 30 boys and their dads! Whichever one you get make sure you spend the time adjusting the settings properly. There's a good youtube video in this forum that was posted last month on that subject.

Have this saw also, Ok for this project. proper setup is a must to keep blade on. +1 on video.

You can get a rotozip bit that will fit your dremel for doing side cuts. works good with the router attacment. It will walk into the grain though, so if you're not steady, you'dwant a fence.

What is CA glue everyone keeps talking about?

Damn, that saw looks expensive. Do I need to spend a ton of money for a band saw to cut pinewood derby cars?

I bought my bandsaw on craigslist. I dont make a lot of fancy curves or cuts. Just need something to thin them out and cut balsa / bass fenders. I have a 12" Craftsman which is way to big I think, but I got it for $50.00 and couldnt pass it up.
