Thin car

For aerodynamics or to get more weight in car
Hmm an interesting question.
I heard that man has not exactly figured out how a plane flies yet.
After keeping planes aloft for 100 years and acheiving supersonic speeds we still do not know if it is the Bernoulli principle or Newtown's 3rd law that creates lift.

Aero is a factor, but weight is by far the biggest factor IMO. Its all about being able to put the weight where you want it.

Last year I built a "block car" for my 5 year old to race in the sibling races. Well, it looked like a normal pinewood block, but really it was a thin pine frame with balsa on top. I was able to get over 3 oz of weight into the back of it. It took first place in siblings. In fact, other than our family cars, there was only one car in the entire pack that was faster.

Here it is on the right (obviously) ....

And a peak at the underbelly ....

LOL That block is what I'm going to build for our derby next year. And by that time I should be able to make it the fastest there. I might use Balsa to build the box on top! /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

My son wanted a brick of gold as a car so that's what we made. He took first place in his Tigers pack. It was fun to make. Pine frame with balsa all around. Super light. Tungsten in the back.

LOL!

You totally rock LB!

Is the car in the middle one of your designs as well?

Would you mind speculating on the choice of weight placement by the builder?

Thanks,

Thanks. I am pretty proud of that block car. It may just be my favorite build. The downside was trying to convince the now-6-year-old to build a thin car this year.

I know the designer of the middle car well. The weight is where it is because he didn't have a freakin clue.
