To Polish or Not To Polish?

My son and daughter both entered cars in the local pack derby. They were the two fastest cars overall. Now as we prepare for the council derby, I am expecting a little stiffer competition. We used graphite on both cars, and we ran with fully polished axles, but the wheels only had a "light polish." My question is this -- Should I remove the wheels, clean them, and give them a full polish, or should I leave well enough alone? I am wondering if since we have already used graphite on the wheels, will I be able to get them clean and/or will the polishing be effective?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

At the risk of reducing the axle diameter, I think I would leave well enough alone. But! Here is one thing that you could do that will help get you some speed if done correctly. Clean the axles the best you can, then spray Pledge on the axles and allow them to dry. Thoroughly burnish the wheels bores with graphite. Install axles in wheels and reinstall on car adjust wheel gaps and you should be ready to go. Search this forum for more details.
