I'm not sure how hard this would be to do, but do you guys think a "Tools" topic would be beneficial to this forum under the FAQ heading? After all we are tool junkies, right? Forgive me in advance John, I didn't mean to create more work for you. /images/boards/smilies/cool.gif

While we're on topic of tools here. I ran across this site for some really cool miniature tools that may fit this hobby and may be an alternative to the more expensive equipment out there. This equipment is typically used for miniature model making and may find a niche for certain aspects of building these cars. Take it for what it's worth. Cool tools no matter how you look at it.

Paul,

You have been holding out on us I see.

That site looks awesome.

Thanks.

+1 on a tools topic

Paul, thanks for sharing the site, very interesting for sure. I think a "Tools" topic could be a good thing. Can always use something else to take up some space.

Right off the bat I am like the "Hold It" for the Dremel better than the clunky Dremel Station I picked up at the home depot.

The Treenail thing looks like it might come in handy.

The Router table that will take a trim router looks useful too.

Good find Paul

Now Joe, what in the world would you be using the treenail tool for, I can only guess that you have other irons in the fire. Besides all this, what in the world is a treenail? I can only speculate that a treenail is to resemble a branch on a tree in the world of model making.

I do like the router table.

Another item that has piqued my interest is the slitting saw and mandrel, listed under the mill accessories about midway down the page.

Am I to understand the mandrel threads onto the spindle in place of the threaded collar per the description? Didn't see any real good pics of the set up.

It's a fastener!

While we are on the topic of tools, here is something I have been looking for. I want to polish the inner and outter hub more efficiently than I have been. I do not have a lathe and just prefer to buy my wheels from DD4H and do the finishing touches. I want to chuck up a wheel to polish the inner and outer hubs. I have in the pastused a drill to clamp on the outer bore, but more times tha not, I will use a bit too much pressure and make the bore out of round. Instead, I would like to be able to attach a contraption something like the jaws on a lathe (3 point) to lightly hold the outside of the wheel while I polish. Any thoughts as to where I could find something like this? Needs to be able to be chucked in a 1/2" drill. I would think a taper shank in a lathe chuck would be difficult to get straight and true in a drill chuck.

I am looking for a larger table for my drill press.

Preferably steel.

Any suggestions?

BRR,
Instead of using some sort of jawed chuck, how about if you had something that the wheel could slip over? I made these to fit on a Pinecar wheel arbor. The different steps fit stock BSA's, 2.0g SS wheels, and 1g MA's. If I run into a wheel that doesn't fit snug, I just secure it with a wrap of painter's tape.

Joe, are you looking for something wider that would help with positioning?

or wider and deeper? (some mods required)

Thanks BR

I am looking for wider.

A Compound slide had not occurred to me.

That contraption is perfect. Now you know I'm going to ask a few more questions about it...

Did you turn a piece of aluminum stock on a lathe?
Is it mounted on a wheel mandrel, or is it completely constructed from scratch?
It almost looks like I could modify a Forstner bit to build this (remove the teeth to protect the whl)?

Good Thinking BRR,

I bet a hole saw and some electrical tape would get things spinning for you.
