What kind of veneer, for those of you that use a veneer, do you all use and where do you get it from? Also any suggestions on glass or plexiglass for a tuning board?

I've only played with veneer. That which I have done was resawed off of a "grand prix" kit block. After resawing, I then sanded smooth. It glued up nice then finished sanding.

I use a balsa or basswood (I don't remember which it is) veneer sheet that I bought at Hobby Lobby. $2.99 for a sheet about 6" by 24".

I add glue to the car body, place the veneer over the top, then apply pressure until it dries. After that, it cuts off w/ an X-acto. Light sanding, and it's done.

I made my daughter's surfboard car using this method this weekend and had multiple people asking how I got the weight into the body.

If your thinking about making a tuning board using the print from DD4H, then Glass is the way to go. IMHO

Yes I have the dd4h tuning board graphic. I just need to find a place hall do a custum glass size that I need for the tuning board im making. I did find balsa wood veneer from Jo Ann Fabrics. Usually they are more expensive than most places, was wondering if anyone knew of any other place. Thanks for the tip on hobby lobby.

Go to a model air plane shop. buy thee Monokote that comes in 4 inch strips.
You can still iron it to remove small wrinkles.
You could also buy the rolls of Mono, but that takes a lot more skill with the iron to get the wrinkles out.

That is no lie! I tried twice so far and haven't been happy with the results either time. I need more practice with that stuff.

I think I saw that stuff... Monokete. Is it like tape?

It's what frustration would look like, if you could buy it in a roll.......

just kidding!

Yes, it has a slightly tacky adhesive backing once you get the liner off. Then, allegedly, if you apply the right amount of heat to it, it activates the adhesive and bonds it. If you apply a bit more heat is causes the monokote to shrink a bit and tighten, and if you apply just the right amount of heat, it melts a hole in it! If you need any help making the holes, I'm the man for the job! lol!

EDIT: They make a product called a trim sheet that is just a sticky backed decal also. I have used that successfully! I believe that is the 4" wide stuff that OPA was talking about.

+1 on the frustration with Monokote. I gave up on that stuff too. It takes some serious patience to make it work right on a PWD cars.

I didn't give up on it. I just haven't figured it out yet! I still have nearly a full roll to learn on!!

I was going to give up on it after the first time........until I realized that the guy at the hobby shop where I bought the stuff neglected to tell me to.. peel ..off.. the.. liner.. before you apply it. It sticks MUCH better when you follow the instructions on the package!

You got a lot more patience than me. I followed the instructions and I actually found a youtube video of a guy putting in on a plane and tried to do the same thing with the heat gun. It kept shrinking on me and would peel up. It looks nice and all, but just to much work for little benefit I got out of it. Just my opinion on the stuff. I like 5kids method of decals better and its a heck of a lot less work.

Guys I use a tape from ULine to cover my cars with. It's real simple and comes in many different colors. The only problem I have the manufacture doesn't sell just a few rolls you have to but 18 rolls for a order but I found a local hobby shop that carried a few rolls.

Is this ULine tape just like there clear boxing tape with just color or is it more like duck tape? Can't find a pic that really showed other then they do have a excellent color variety.

I know this is a few months old, but do the people that use monokote use it as a veneer or use it as a cover? Last year we used a veneer and put the monokote on top of the veneer, but I was thinking about just using the monokote.

I have used monocote as a cover and I would use it again. However, I am a fan of vinyl it is a little thicker and I think it is easier to work with.
