New Items Well that didnt take long

I don't think he is shaking in his boots either.
cool
The earlier point about no cant AND because this is just aluminum (no bushings) means it will have limited life like the DW stuff.

I also wonder about the alignment as you open it up. In order to provide the adjustability for width, they need clearance to allow it to slide out. That might take out the alignment enough right there.

It is clever though, and I am interested in seeing what these blast cars are about !

My youngest son isn't going to get to do a pinewood derby. I hope they do those blast cars, he'd have a blast!
That's a shame !!! BSA is pushing the blast cars for Boy Scouts. I think I will build one for a camp our Troop is going to that has both a PWD race and a blast car race. (And no rule saying you have to use graphite for the PWD race

When I went to the scout shop with my family to pick up my shirt I was checking out the Blast Cars.... I am very interested in these... Especially now that our parking lot is going to be redone....

I might have to hint this for a Church youth project...
idea
Hmmmmm .... I bet they would be FUN!!! I know I would have a BLAST!!! hehehe ...

Meh. It appears to only do straight (level) axle holes — not 3 degree rears.

the fact that it slides open to accept different widths tells the hole story

Did CO2 cars in shop class for middle school. They are pretty fun. I was pretty competitive with the fastest time. I ended up not getting first though cuz the kids at the end didn't do their job stopping the car good and one of my wheels cracked in the semi. I haven't looked at how the boy scouts do theirs. When I did it they had it drag race style running 2 at a time head to head with a light tree. I was a bundle of nerves and had really fast start reflexes. They still do it that way or is it all automated start?

I haven't looked into it much but I bet it's all done manually. I still have hope that he'll get a Derby but the Blast Car thing would be a great new experience. We could apply pwd principles and make a killer car. There's probably no rule for graphite! /images/boards/smilies/thumb.gif

Just looked at a few YouTube videos. Looks like they have a start gate that blasts all the cars at the same time. When I did it back in the day we had push buttons for each car and you had to time your start with lights. So there was an element of quick reflexes. Ours were also much longer, maybe 12inches.

Since there is no hill the main focus was only on friction and weight. I am sure there is some degree of weight balancing to keep from wanting to wheely and pull on the guide wire.

Blast Car is dead.
wah
BSA National scrapped the program at the end of 2013 according to my local Scout Shop. They never did anything to promote it and now it's dead. I never understood why the Boy Scouts don't do PWD, only the Cubs. Boy Scouts is right around when the boy is capable of doing everything himself, but he's now aged out. I realize that it was supposed to be a replacement for the Soap Box Derby for younger kids, but we don't really do that anymore.

I'm sad our Troop never got a chance to run the race. I have one of the kits put away. I guess it's a collector's item now.

It was head to head automated start, and instead of a track, it had a small eye bolt on the bottom for guiding the car via fishing line. There were also ski replacements instead of wheels.
