I was curious as to what are the steps in racing at a scout level?

My son won his pack race and then went on to win overall at the District level. Is there another race/step for him to proceed to as a scout or is he done for the year? In another thread someone was talking about council level at mall of america? I've never heard of the Council level?

I was thinking about asking the Pack Leaders, but they don't seem to know much about the pinewood derby outside of the pack race.

Each district can be different. Call down at the Council Headquarters and find your district rep. They are supposed to know and in most places it is someones full time job. Sometimes you can get something going if it has been dropped. The district next to us has a super big derby, our district dropped it so we are working on doing an invitational for all the packs in the district by ourselves. No council races around hear that I know of, but
many places have them. We used to even have a State race at the yearly Jamboree many years ago.

The Mid America race is in May. Kind of like a National race. You can mail in the car and proxy race it. The race is videocast on the internet. We have 3 cars we are sending in and all the families are coming to our house to watch. The kids are super excited.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll have to look at the Mid-America Race. Never have done Proxy racing before, how does that work?

I just called my council office. The lady who answered was about as friendly to deal with as a coiled up rattlesnake, but at least I was able to leave a message for someone. Hopefully they return my call?

Are you in the Northern Star Council...? If yes, the next level is the council race at the Mall of America in June.

Proxy racing just means you're going to mail in your car. There's a couple of methods to do this to keep you car secure through the mailing process. Spacewalker, DD4H, and 5kids all have either a video or pictures to show how this is done.

Apparently, this is more common than I thought. The Mid America is trying to get touted as the granddaddy of them all.

+1

I have helped my nephew and 2 good friends build cars the last two years. I am amazed at the leaderships lack of "commitment", no body really cares. There is no communication, no practice track time and if a car does not make it to the finish, "oh well". I hope to have a workshop or at least an information sharing meeting next year. (two dads did not even know what graphite was or why they should use it)

I doubt they call back. They're to busy collecting money to make their paychecks bigger. I've called and emailed our council leadership about some legitimate concerns and I never heard from them. BSA has the highest paid execs of any non profit.

No return call yet, but I'm not expecting much from them.

Check out the CEO of United Way. He's banking for a non profit. Something in the millions last I heard

I will second the earlier comments that the exact area you live in makes a huge difference relative to the Scouting PWD opportunitites and competitiveness. Our local Council had a joke of a Council race every two years. Not too far away they pack a large high school gym with 8 tracks for a weekend.

I wouldn't come down too hard on your Pack's leadership. You can always seek an opportunity to assist or replace them
idea
They have a lot of other things to worry about and take care of compared to the typical minority of PWD fanatics. I would seek the people that put on the District race, they might have a better idea what the opportunities are. I symphathize with the beef about what the execs are paid (and some other things BSA), but that's a different conversation in my book.

We sought other open Scout races in the area and found some that were fun. You might be able to do the same, but don't be surprised if they all have somewhat different rules and never-know-what-you-will-find tracks. If it is after your Pack/District race, then you don't have to be as worried about your cars.

Proxy racing is always an option. I think whatever keeps you and your kids doing fun things together is great, by the way. I am not the biggest fan of the Mid America race, but will leave it at that.

I'm on the committee for the Mid America Pinewood Derby and we are trying very hard to make it one of the best experiences possible. We had over 400 cars last year and over a hundred I believe were proxied! We are running 3 tracks this year and are upgrading the Live video stream for each track. Check it out http://www.mid-americaderby.com/ First 100 people that register get in a drawing for a Best Track! I think they are at 78 some right now. (just got a car from Guam!) If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Well, I didn't get a call from the Council office so I inquired about the next step in the the derby when I was in the Scout store today. The scout store is attached to the council offices and there were two workers and a council employee wearing a suit and tie. One of the workers (who is a cool guy talk to) said that there is no next step but some other councils have a council race and nationals, but not ours. The entire time I'm talking to the worker the suit & tie is listening. When we were done discussing the derby the worker said that there could be a council race if someone were to volunteer to head it up and he is winking at me when he said it. Thats when the suit & tie spoke up and said yeah maybe if your asking, you can head it up? I said no thanks, Ill just keep my mouth shut and not ask questions that will put me in charge of what I'm asking about.

If it is something you want, looks like the door is open. It only takes a spark.. If you decide to procede, We know a guy that has a lot of insight in putting on big council races.
