What axle do you use for graphite?

To groove or not to groove. What size? This is son's final year, last year he was District Webelos 1 champ, but lost the grand championship. We have never won a District Grand Championship and this year we want it! We can't use oil, I am a much better oil racer than graphite. Graphite is so touchy, too much too little. I hate it. We get the super tough inspection each year as well, our inspection takes 3x longer because they see the fenders and start double checking everything.

If you can groove, go with those. They help hold in some of the graphite besides the other benefits. They check for axle tips?

They don't pull the axles, but they check the heads. You can't see my tips because I epoxy my slots and drill holes.

Definitely grooved. Burnish graphite into the hubs (Walgreens Q-Tips). Apply graphite into the hubs (once mounted) liberally. As in, "this stuff is getting everywhere!" liberally. Give the wheels a final spin before check-in. Win.

Good luck!

After reading the original post and before reading the other posts the first thing I wanted to say was grooved axles, to agree with some of the others that have posted here.

And like Crash Enburn said burnish the graphite into the bore. Also, don't forget to Pledge the axles!

+1 with what everyone has said. I got a tip to use the smooth side of a #43 drill bit that I polished to burnish inside the bore. You can use more appropriate weight on the wheel with it. You can over graphite I have learned. While I do put some in the bore once installed, I tell my son to spin the wheels a good bit before turning it in. His slowest times were runs 1-4 with his fastest runs being 10-16 which were also his most consistant. Also, since you're using graphite, make sure to keep the wheel tred clean. If they let you clean the wheels between races or at all, do so! There are scouts that think more is less when it comes to graphite. My son has always used colored wheels so we see how much graphite is on the track.
