What is a good quality brand drill press?

There's a Chinese drill press that's very cheap with no run out. Search google for micro or mini Chinese drill press and you'll find it. It has no run out. It's the cheapest on the market. Square the table first thing and then check your holes with a 6" aircraft bit and a good quality square. If you don't know how to square a drill press table get back to the forum.

I`m sure you've seen those tiny Chinese drill presses on ebay for around $80 free shipping. Variable speed high precision. I got mine 2 years ago and it has been alright. However it took some work to get my table squared. It is better for drilling holes than my harbor freight press but that's all I can use it for.

I think that whatever you get takes some amount of work to make it right. Especially if you are trying to drill flat axles for razer type wheels. I don't think runout is as big of a deal (within practical limits) as people used to think. I do believe though that its a real advantage to be able to leave a DP setup for drilling axles and not using it for anything else.

I made all my early cars with the cheap HF and John's Silver Bullet. They have a newer version now with a light that is only $60 with the current coupon (expiring tomorrow). http://www.harborfreight.com/5-speed-bench-drill-press-60238.html

The smaller table can be an advantage for axle drilling since you don't need as large of an area to be perfectly flat and clamping is easier. Either way you may have to take the table to a machine shop to mill or do your own flatness/front-to-rear customization. I have seen used Proxxon's and I bought a MicroMark, they are not necessarily perfect either.
