What to do in your Pinewood retirement? (warning: Pic intensive)

PapaV, I saw that and was going to suggest you not use your ATM pin number as a guess.

I have to head out on a Scout bike ride around Pearl Harbor in a bit. You can adjust your guesses (or post your guess for those that haven't guessed yet) until the deadline. Official guesses are logged on post #35. I'll probably get a chance to edit things one more time between getting home and heading out again to set-up the track for tonight.

Man...I have to tell you guys that there's a bit of pressure. Those are some fast times some of you are anticipating!

Oh yeah, there's one more Retirement project car that I need to have time to work on sometime today before the race. I think you'll like this one.

Chris.

Just got in the door from the Derby. It was a great race with almost 50 cubs and cars. Will share pics after I can get unloaded and cleaned up. Gran Champion was Ryan who put a new coat of Monokote on his car. His car ran somewhere around 3.12's in spite of running about 3.08 during the setup test runs. Still enough for the overall win.

Bryce with his Vampire Stake also made the 8 car final, but I don't recall the times. I hope to have the database when the Den Leader's is similarly settled.

For those wondering about my "out of competition" car. After set-up, I got to do my five runs with just a few den members present before the actual races. It did cross the finish line nose first!!! The first five runs were 3.053, 3.067, 3.065 3.072 and 3.065. The average for those five runs was 3.064 seconds which means that IAE Racing is our winner!

More detail to follow. Thanks all for playing along!

Happy Birthday and Congrats to IAE Racing!

Here's some photo's from last night. My favorite part of the night is the pre-race Check-In. I love seeing what comes out of the imagination of the kids, and I love excitement and anticipation that race day brings.

Car #48 ended up as Pack Winner.

Whenver I talk to the kids and parents about going fast, I try not to give them an idea that a certain body design is fastest. I would hate to deprive them of the creative process that results in these truly wonderful designs. Sometimes, it results in my taking on tough projects to help incorporate the other non-aesthetic design principles though.

Alrighty...now that we know that JohnH and Family are okay, we can get on with the prize givin'.

For his awesome prognostication, IAE Racing has his choice of the following prizes;

1) A roll of hard to find (in my house at least) nickles/digital scale check weights.

2) An almost new bottle of Sally Hanson's Teflon Tuff (only one thumbnail worth used)...see the Teflon Tuff Thread if you need more 'splaining.

3) A mystery prize of "trust me" stuff packed into a USPS Priority Flat Rate Box (the bigger one than this).

ahhh...maybe he'll share with you...
txchemist says that you only need 20 nickles to check your scale, and I hear that Sally Hanson goes a long way...wait, that didn't come out right.

No need to share.

I use calibration weights the check the scale, when I can find them. Which reminds me, it's time to clean the shop again!

Real men go for the mystery ... Come take the mystery box IAE.. Box Box Box ... Sally H has gone a long way with Cheis already ... LOL Nickels ..well you get 2 bucks .. But the Mystery box .. That is a whole new Ball Game...

Crowd is chanting Mystery Box...

Well, al roll of nickels would go a long way if Nationals were in Vegas. Anyone who knows me knows I'm too cheap to play dimes......
hmmm
did I hear some chanting toga?

I thought I'd address some of the questions I've received (now I know who's been watching this thread!).

1) How fresh was your lube? Very Fresh...with all the activities from the week and day, I barely had time to dump in graphite and mount the wheels. Zero runs before recording times.
2) Did you bring your car up to 5 ounces? No, because of the above factors, I forgot, and the car ran at 4.92 ounces.
3) Why did you use coins? Because my friend pirated my extra tungsten and wheels off the car I gave him to benchmark against his son's pack car...and for the visual effect.
4) How was the track set up? It was a 42 foot Best Track cleaned with Simple Green, then wiped down with Pledge, Champ Finish line, Mechanical Start Gate. We leveled things as close as humanly possible, and the slope was set at 26 degrees per my digital level (I'm told that League tracks are set up at 27 degrees. Is that true? Race stats say that some of the lanes were faster than others. This track is only a year old, but has the beginnings of significant corrosion on the racing surface. The pack needs to come up with a maintenance schedule.
5) Did you get more runs in after you broke your graphite in? Yes, after the runs for this contest, I ran it about a dozen more times. The times got considerably faster (I'm not saying how much though
AddEmoticons08013
), then tapered off. The post race runs after sitting a couple of hours were right back at where the first runs were, so there appears to have been a sweet spot.
6) Do you think you can make this car go faster? Yes. It already has, but I'd like to see if I can get it below 3.00
7) Do you have some sort of secret sauce on there? Yes, aerodynamic duct tape.
8) Does your car have a name? No, but we might have to change that given the notoriety it's achieved.

Hope that helps you lurkers!

I don't think the Sally Hansen would be for me. I'll leave it for those guys over in the beauty shop thread.

Hi all, I wanted to share a recent exchange I had with John from IAE racing. As you might recall, John was the winner of my "predict the time" contest. When I contacted him to coordinate his prize, he immediately declined and instead suggested a contribution to my local Food Bank, or other similar charity. I was impressed by his thinking of others and will honor his request. Since then I've suggested that I can do that AND send him a little something for his winning. Again he declined and thinking of others suggested maybe some food stuff for the crew that helps run the next league event. Such is the character of the man!
