Hello. First timer here. Helping my son with his pinewood derby car for cub scouts. Reading the Northen Star Council rules we are under, it says "2.3 wheelbase: the distance between the center of the front and rear wheel must be no less than 4 inches." It does not specify a maximium? Sounds like then extending the wheel base to as close to the ends as possible without having the wheels stick out past the end of the 7 inch block lengthwise is the way to go? Thanks.

Not necessarily the fastest wheel base (although some have been successful) but will be very stable & can probably get away with a little less steer. Most everyone in league racing is right around the 4 3/4 area.
Ballistic is spot on. The shorter the wheel base the more difficult to tune. The longer the wheel base the more stable the car. There is always a trade off between speed and stability. 4.75" - 5.0" is where most cars will land at the league level.
