White Pine Blocks, where to find?

Being a Newb, I go through a few blocks before I'm happy! But I'd like it to be nice and light white pine when I finally do get it right. But I hate to buy from John, when I throw away so many! You guys find anything at Menards or your local lumber yard?

Basswood or aspen works good for test pieces. John's sugar pine blocks for the real thing.

I haven't purchased a BSA scout derby kit in a while, but what is the cost on them. If your just practicing you could rip the block in half and have 4 potential test drills, 2 per block, just use a short wheel base drill with the rears being 5/8" from the back. Drill it and if it's not to your liking give it a 180 and drill again. Just an idea.

Oh yeah... when you're done with the bad drilled blocks, save them. Use them for paint blocks, support blocks to keep the cars from rolling off the table, drill multiple holes in them to hold axles or whatever else you can think of.

BSA kits here (Raleigh area, NC) are 3.99, I think. Might be 2.99.

I cut 3 cars out of one block this year.

I get the 4x36 at home depot. I went through an entire stack to find the 2 lightest ones. It had a stamp on it PSP, I took that to mean premium sugar pine./images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif

If you do the BSA kit you can get multiple test blocks .. Then like gravity said use them as stands for paint ... And or I use them for stands for your old cars ... I keep many cars sitting round so if I want to run a side by side comparison I'm a freshen-up away ... Help compare data/techniques
I also have used aspen and TQM from lowes ... Both work well for testing
