Workbench

I have been given the task of finding a workbench for myself for christmas. I have about a 4-5 foot section that i can put the bench in, I want a decent work surface and a overhead lamp if possible. My wife wants it to have a peg board set up on the back to hang tools. I am looking at this being my car building place as well as other projects with wood. I need to keep the price reasonable, 200 dollars I would say but open to all suggestions. I have looked around and found a few things but just do not seem to find that perfect one.

Just one idea, one you can stand up and work on: http://www.harborfreight.com/60-inch-workbench-93454.html?ccdenc=eyJjb2RlIjoiMjQzOTU1MjYiLCJza3UiOiI5MzQ1NCIsImlzIjoiMTI5Ljk5IiwicHJvZHVjdF9p%0D%0AZCI6IjQ0MDgifQ%3D%3D%0D%0A
$130 is about the lowest sale/coupon price which leaves room for light, power strip and pegboard. (Actually a hair cheaper at regular sale price with 20% coupon.) It's a full 5' though.

My friend has this (or similar) workbench from HF - and its not bad at all. That said, he is actually building a new workbench. I will say end vises are not cheap and that I think he is spending more on his end vise then the HF workbench costs....

I would use the $200 to purchase the tools and lumber to build it myself. Then you have a new bench and new tools.
I agree also guys, but my problem (and maybe others), is that the grand plans too often just don't happen. I am actually in this same thought process right now myself. It's all about time, and money. Even with tight money, with work and a bunch of kids, time is almost tighter. The HF bench has nice drawers and a top, but it's also like a kitchen island more than a built-in. All depends what you are looking for and where your trade-offs are.

With some left kitchen counter top material, I am looking at making a 6' work island myself that allows for both (sitting and stand-up work). Probably won't happen for months though ... I have looked at Craigslist also for something that has the drawers already as a starting point, but haven't found anything close yet.

I went a completely different direction.

I knew I'd only be doing pwd and other light work. I wanted lots of table space, adjustable height and the ability to work sitting down primarily. And I didn't want to spend a fortune.

So I went with this office desk system from IKEA:

Specifically I went with something like this ..

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S99006362/

Its all modular, so when the table surface gets too beat up I can just buy another surface and keep the rest of the hardware.

Its not the heavy duty work bench you normally think of, but its plenty sturdy for PWD work.

or......

Say you will only take up 5 or so feet of space... and make this

I ended up with 16 ft of bench to play with here... the whole backboard is pegboard... has a bottom shelf under the bench for storage....

The top is white formica, so I can see what I am doing... the end with the green mat is where I now do my body work for the cars... not in the pic is my proxxon, and a scroll saw, then on the other end is where I do wheel and axle prep.. and a computer for music and stuff... LOL

Don't say please... say hmmmm... turned out bigger than I thought it would.
lol

When I build these, I made them to last... there is plenty of room and with the LED lights... plenty of light

Home Depot has a work bench for $69. It got good reviews. I will go this route since I don't have time to build one from scratch.

Thanks guys... yeah... it took a few days to build, but it was sooooo worth it to have the space to play... The best part of all of it is the dust with the bodies doesn't get with the wheels and axles....

and the light ! ! ! ! !
