Axle and Wheel Re-prep Problem

Would anyone who sands their hubs please share how they do so and with what grit? I just can't envision a method that I feel confident in not screwing up the small outer hub cone.

I would not sand anything, but I do polish the outter hub with Novus (especially for the rear wheels). I would consider a method of spinning the wheel without something in the bore. (thanx BR)

Not sure whether this is similar or different from Bracketracer's design, but Teeeman over at DT posted a design for a tool he and his kids came up with. Might accomplish what you're looking for.

i hit mine with 80 grit

I just finished polishing with 80 grit it seems to kind of melt the wheel away, Maybe my method was wrong, I'll try 60 grit like B_reg said. My car won't make it down the tuning board I even raised it to a 45 degree angle, Tre can you post pics of 80 grit process.

Don't forget to turn the wheel while you're sanding. Otherwise, you might get a fairly imperceptible (but there) flat spot on the tread.

Cooper posted a pic of a wheel where the wheel didn't get rotated under the sander:

I just destroyed all my wheels and the scout shop is out, I think I start using china wheels, maybe they will take the 30 grit paper better.

I'm thinking maybe you should just use a metal file...or, better yet, a wood rasp. Remove more bad material that way.

Ok. I pretty much do the same with novus. When I read "sand" it made me think using actual sand paper before polishing

I do actually use sandpaper (well, microfinishing paper) on the inner and outer hubs with the tools referenced in the link above. Never tried 80 grit though. TRE, does it leave lube grooves or something? lol.

I've stated this more than once since I've been back on the board but VK why do you continue to attempt to post things from another site? Yes there are other leagues, yes there are other forums. But again why must you continue to poison this watering hole? I will kindly ask you to stop doing this. Next time I will begin a full verbal thrashing. You have not seen me unload yet and suggest that we don't go down that path. Few have tried, and where are they today? Gone! Again please add value to our board not things from other places. If they were good and or fast, they would be at NPWDRL racing. By the way, when will your cars be in a race?

I keep the quetip heads after I cut the shafts out to use to polish the wheel bore with John's bore polish.

If I want to polish the surface of the hubs, I take the cue tip head, chuck up the small remaining shaft end in my drill and put the same polish I use for the bores on the cuetip head, turn the drill on and then light push the wheel against the quetip head....both inner and outer hub surface. Seems to work just fine for me....the only junk thing is now cleaning all that stuff off the outer hub area particularly in the corner at the edges but a small tooth pick or a cue tip shaft cut at an angle so it has a tip works well for that.

Ive never had an issue where I thought I made the hub surface out of round or flat in some areas and not others since the que tip head is pretty soft...but looks wise, the surface is pretty shiny so I think its good.

Poison the watering hole? I shared the link because I read the post and it reminded me of an actual problem that somebody was trying to solve. Since I thought the tool might possibly be useful to somebody wanting to polish their hubs, I shared it.

I'll send cars in when time and money allow. Sorry I can't give you a date for that. Maybe when my youngest is out of diapers. I'll be sure and let folks know, since the question keeps coming up.

I wouldn't use having kids as an excuse to why you're not racing. We all have kids. I have 3 of my own, 2 in diapers. I also believe john has something like 13??? I can understand the money issue and I'm sure we've all been there. But talk to ngyoung . He used stock parts until he bought the good stuff. It's either a passion or a hobby for you. We'd love to see you race, but family come first of course.

After getting oil the cost to enter is about $22 if you can safely pack 1 car in a box less then 12" in any dimension and stay under 1lb.

Having said that I don't think goading someone into joining is the way to go. Like most of us VK has caught the PWD bug. I think we all get obsessed with reading everything we can find about it at first. The animosity that began in a previous thread just needs to be let go. It has spilled over into too many other threads since.

It is much more productive and easier to show why a given suggestion is not advised. In the least it keeps a threadvfrpm going off topic.

Blessed are the peace makers ngyoung....

However, I will blast away as I am no such person. The problem is you guys are just way too serious. I joke around and poke fun. Hijacking or photo bombing a post is just too much fun. I anticipate a fair amount of grief after my cars probably perform a lackluster performance tomorrow. Thats all part of the fun.

Speaking of photobombing. Dear Lord Mr Chips - you've gotta change that avatar... everytime you post something I catch a glimpse of Tanks hairy body and big belly. I get enough of that when I see myself in the mirror each day.

When I make my wheels on my lathe (or modify BSA wheels) I cut the outer hub with a reversed cone which gives a super smooth surface and then polish with 600 grit all the way up to 12,000 while still in the lathe, and it is turning slowly so as not to melt the plastic.
