Good
It's a good thing that the different race classes get looked at to improve them. There have been a lot of cool things that have come out for racing. Wheel cavity weights, wheel cavity air deflectors, front trailing fenders, new wheels, new body shapes, etc. that have improved the times on the track and makes for very competitive racing.
But I think the BASX class should be very limited in what you can and can not do. Almost if you will, a spec class with body maybe not even shaped, with internal weighting, four 2.4g wheels and axles. Put them together, prep them and race. He who preps their car the best wins.

LightninBoy said:Not suggesting this for BASX - but I've been thinking it would be cool to have a class that promoted a variety of body shapes. For example, have a rule that a part of the body must be at least 1.5" high when measured from the ground. More thought would be need to nail down the rules but the idea is to do have something that forces us away from the candy bar shape.
I know SR does that to a degree, but it would be fun to see hand shaped bodies that don't necessarily look like street cars.
It may even force a few of us to start painting cars again.
On second thought ... never mind. Bad idea.
DD4H said:(From New NPWDRL Class thread) A lot of people want a cheap class to race in. This allows nearly any wheel a chance to win.
Etc. etc.DD4H said:(Same thread) Fixed. 1 3/4" body rule. Good catch. I am trying to eliminate the pre bought cars that dominate. I am also trying to make a budget class that all can enjoy and have a chance to be competitive without having to spend a lot of money on wheels.
Etc. etc.DD4H said:(From The Fastest Wheels Available!!! thread) We have seen an drop of .005 seconds using this line of wheels. They take twice as long to hand cut so they are not cheap.

I'd love to see more cars that were fast, but were actually carved into attractive shapes. How to do so in a competitive class would be...tricky though.
Should leagues seek to award some kind of recognition for aesthetics, as well? Maybe this is deserving of its own thread. Pulling it away off topic, here. /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

One reason for my limited participation is the money. When BASX was first created, it was a 1-3/4" x 7" body with four wheels. And that was it. Cheap. Intended to learn prep.
Then the Puma wheel weights came along. By some extension of logic I've never understood, weights glued onto the side of the body are not considered part of the body, something else. Suddenly, dense weights right at the rear axle line are legit for this 'a body and wheels only' class. $ Ka-ching! $
"Hey, the Puma weights are also aero! If we can aero the back wheels, why not the fronts?!" $ Ka-ching! $
And now we have the expensive, fastest wheels available. $$ Double-Ka-ching! $$
Yes, these wheels would have, and should have been legal from the very get-go. But as soon as they were made available and listed as "they take twice as long to hand cut so they are not cheap" they should have been immediately disallowed. Yes, any racer could have found these NOS wheels. But nowhere near as many racers have the equipment or skills to turn them.
I know that these parts don't trump prep. But they do trump equal prep. And many of those of us on the caboose end of the results list and not really willing to shell out very much money toward these "toy cars" see no hope of ever winning a race. So why bother?
Under the current rule set, I will not participate in BASX.
