What would you guys say is the best background to have to be a pro racer? What profession or history if any, do the best racers have? Is there an advantage that can be found in majority of the top terr? Just a fun question. I'm an expert wood worker with fine finishing and polishing experience. I read some of the posts about math equations and such and am in awe at the brain power of some of you. On the other hand I've worked for college professors who did not know how to read a tape measure! I love this forum simply because every walk of life will contribute. So, what profession background is king?

hmmm
DD4H!!! King John....
cool
You are right there are so many backgrounds especially in the top ranks... But one bad prep can ruin a race or knock them out... for sure...

Machinist/Engineer.....Engineer/Machinist. If you have a machinist that can think like an engineer and an Engineer who is good with his hands, it is a hard combo to beat. AKA (5 Kids) Now I know I won't get anybody dissagreeing with this post! /images/boards/smilies/nono.gif

You are right Bulldog...this is a fun topic. There is a posting called "What do you do for a living" in the lighter side. And it is fun to know what everyone does. I think everyone is some kind or "Combo" person, kinda like yourself. A master wood worker and just a run of the mill picture painter HAHA just kidding. You could probably make as much of a living at either one my friend. Myself, I am just a "Jack of all trades...and a Master of none".

Automotive technician: Think like a mechanical, electrical, hydraulic engineer, mathematician, computer diagnostician, machinist, analyst, laborer, electrician, able to decipher schematics, able to think like an on-board computer program, understand geometry, physics, scientist, etc... I'm sure this list could go on. Of course, to varying degrees of knowledge. Building these pinewood race cars will employ many aspects of knowledge and it will make you reach into areas that you once thought, "what would I ever do with this bit of information". Does what I know make me better than the next guy, more than likely not. Can it hinder me, it sure can, as I over think the simple things. Paralysis from over analysis is often a pitfall.

Your day job doesn't matter ---this is what does !!!

1. Attitude is the key to success
2. Take pride in your sacrifice
3. Have a passion to win

This goes for everything in life.

+1, I think the most important thing for being able to make fast cars is a patient and understanding wife!

Hey, I am a CPA/IT nerd. And I am about the same age as Methuselah. Doesn't that count for something?
