ProStock rules state no aftermarket axles, only axles from official BSA retailer, however, grooves are permitted. Which is your go-to axle? This car may compete in both graphite only and oil if that matters.

This is not a scientific comparison by any stretch, but we've done both and didn't see a significant difference. The axles from my son's car from this year were machined and true, but had no grooves. The axles from my daughter's car were machined the same but did have grooves. Both cars were prepped the same and both were running graphite and both ran nearly identical times. The difference wasn't huge and the advantage wasn't consistently with either car.
When it comes to BSA axles there are so many variables just due to the inconsistencies with quality that you could probably have a fast or slow axle either way... That being said, my guess would be that grooves would be better overall otherwise grooved axles wouldn't be a thing... They certainly didn't hurt performance.

Grooved axles gained popularity because they help compensate for irregular bores in the wheels. If you have better quality bores then the grooves don't help as much and may risk bending with rough handling. But, many racers accept the risk to gain a couple thousandths.
As far as options go, you might find some Revell brand axles around. They are usually more round and without the bumps but I found them to be slightly smaller in diameter than the USA BSA axles. I prefer larger axles so my kids use the USA ones and lightly polish them. I've heard rumors of vintage BSA axles that are larger still than the modern parts but you won't find those in a store.

If your talking about the NYC race, you are not allowed to use oil there in any class. We used non grooved axles last year and did well. I think, as mentioned before, more important is the axles are straight.
