We have Districts on 3-22. Our race starts at 1:30. We can either checkin the night before or 1 hr before race. We're running John's oil mix so are we better off waiting till right before the race?

Lucky your rules allow for oil. Hopefully with some more explaining and talking the "rule makers" will allow it and get off of the "it'll ruin the track" kick.

Never leave your car overnight if you can help it. Too much funny stuff goes on and I am not kidding. The oil will be fine whenever.

I was thinking the same thing. It's at a large mall too. I like getting checked in early in case someone disputes the car for some reason. Like 2 yrs ago at districts when my boy took his 8-wheeled tank out of the box and a "loiter-around-the checkin-table-dad" loudly bursts out, "He's got 8 wheels. That's unfair!" Then everyone turns to look. I replied that the center wheels don't touch and then he lowered his head and walked away. Did he think we had 8 tiny motors. Didn't he realize that if all 8 wheels touched we would be slower. Anyways, you never know who's gonna say what about the setup so I like to leave extra time.

I'll take your advice and go the day of the race. After we get it aligned which will probably be the night before the race should I store it in a ziplock bag?

Good Luck Dave! I also would check in the day of, your car is unique so people might want to pick it up and look at it. Don't give them a chance! I have seen so many cars dropped and they are never the same. Most of the time at our District and Pack races we are the only ones with fenders so everyone wants to pick the car up and look at it.

You guys were all correct!!!

We checked in the morning of the race and had no issues. One kid from our den stood in a long line to check in the night before. After the race he looked at his car and it had been dropped on the rear causing a big dent in the wood and chipped paint.

That same kids' Webelo II brother built a new car for this final derby race. He had a 3 wheeler. They watched as the Boy Scout loading cars at the line repeatedly pushed the front end down with pressure trying to get it to set flat. The MC actually had to go up and tell him that it's designed that way and to leave it alone. It had major death wobble and when they got it home and rolled it they found that it now steered the raised wheel into the rail.

Another kid had a 3-wheeled railrunner and checked in the night before. It wobbled like crazy. After the race they found that it had been dropped and that one front axle and wheel had completely broken off. Whoever did it decided to wrap tape around it and run it without telling the kid or his dad.

These cars that checked in the night before were wheeled into a storage area on tables for the night. Recipe for disaster.

Would you guys mention these issues to the District guys running the show so they can watch better next year?

We're glad it worked out for you. Knowledge is good. Wisdom is applying.

This is why several here have implored to the masses: GET INVOLVED, ASK TO BE ON THE COMMITTEES, DO YOUR BEST. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and bellyache (not picking on any individuals), but it takes a leader to step it up and make positive change.

This is why I always advocate for check-in as close as possible to the race for Cub Scout races. Too much can go wrong and your average Boy Scout is not the most subtle nor delicate of creatures. I know, I have a couple! /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

I think the biggest issue with committees getting the lube rules changed is mainly from mixing cars with graphite and cars with oil. It would need to be an either one or the other. I think the worry is cars running with oil using it incorrectly and liberally where it is being slung out of the wheel bores in the race.

Because it's "Okay" to use graphite incorrectly and liberally and being slung out of the wheel bores during the race.

Not saying graphite doesn't make a mess but graphite and oil together all over the track is even more of a mess.
