So I got to pick out my Christmas presents this year, lucky there was a little $ left after Santa. First tool that I got was the Goat boy axle bender, man this thing is SWEET! My most dreaded part of the build and what I usually over look just got a whole lot easier. A little secret, Kinser posted a little on this, there is speed to be found in the proper bend. The big thing under the tree is I found me a nice little used Taig jewlers lathe. I got most of the stuff I need to get experimenting, now I just need the years and years of practice and experience to be able to produce anything good. Should be fun distroying things, LOL!

Oh Baby !! Santa came early ! I don't think it will take you years !!
clap

Yep, sounds like great fun !

Taig II 4500.

Same as mine. I'm sure you will like it a lot. It's great for wheels. Leaves a lot to be desired for use on metal.

Mine works fine with metal, yours must be broken.

The problem is you never ran a real lathe as in an industrial lathe.

I hope it cuts medal ok. I got some titanium coming for some axles. LOL

It will be fine for axles and small diameters. What I was talking about and 5 Kids knows what I was talking about was cutting a large diameter. It will do it, but it takes forever and a day to get it done. Something I could do on my lathe at work in maybe 3 cuts, and 10 minutes time, will take you 50 cuts and a couple of hours to get the same result. That is all I meant. It's a nice little lathe for the hobbyist.
Once you master it, you will like it a lot.

I remember seeing like the Jose Rodriguez videos and a few people with big web sites on adapting stuff, but no books. Part of the mastering I think, is learning how to create custom fixtures, etc. which are PWD specific.

Unfortunatley Joel there just isn't any good information out there on how to cut a good PWD wheel or axle. The people that know how to do it aren't telling and the people that don't are posting bad information. It is an aquired skill and once you get it then it is easy.... Just cut a wheel and try it, if it is slow try something else. I switched from DD wheels to my own after I used John's wheels to get my sub 2.93 badge back in the day... I sucked for what seemed like forever until I finally cut one that worked.

I hope it was not me that is posting bad information
shutup
... That was absolutely not my intent. I was just giving QT the business for getting an early Christmas gift with no instructions.

I didn't mean you Chief.... I was just speaking in general. I think all the guys here have a clue about what they are doing, but outside of here? not so much....

Well I got the lathe last night and man this thing is cool. Being used I spent a ton of time cleaning and lubing everything. Tonight's chore is getting to mounted to the board and getting the variable speed motor mounted correctly. Than the wheel destroying begins!!!

Good luck with your new toy!
I have had a lathe for about 2.5 years now and still haven't figured out how to turn a good wheel!
dazed

It mostly due to the time required to learn the process. I just haven't had the time to come up with the custom cutting tools for all facets to produce a good wheel. Let me know if you come up with a good wheel chuck. That is a tough part, is how to mount the wheel perfectly in the lathe to do the work. With you living so close to the man I'm sure you will get some good pointers.
Have a good one
