I have had a lathe for about 2.5 years now and still haven't figured out how to turn a good wheel!![]()
It mostly due to the time required to learn the process. I just haven't had the time to come up with the custom cutting tools for all facets to produce a good wheel. Let me know if you come up with a good wheel chuck. That is a tough part, is how to mount the wheel perfectly in the lathe to do the work. With you living so close to the man I'm sure you will get some good pointers.
Have a good one
SoGone, I told you 2 years ago to take a night school course for basic machine shop. I was serious if you have the time, do it. It will get you where you need to be so much faster than trying to figure it out on your own. I served an 8,000 hour apprenticeship and went to night school for 4 years. Once I got my tool and die makers journeyman's papers, I felt I accomplished a lot, but I'll tell you this, that was just the beginning. After all those hours, it was just the start. There is no substitute for experience. If you are mechanical, then with a course you should be able to grasp the needed skills quickly. I'm sure you are, you build some nice, fast cars. I would reccomend you take a course as well Joel. You will learn many invaluable skills............(provided you have a good teacher) Ask around and talk to people that have taken a course at your local tech school, maybe it isn't worth the money? I for one think it would be though?SoGone, I will tell you this.........my wheels do not come out perfect everytime.............that is a fact!
