I practiced prepping wheels with Jon's old method (#1 and red rocket) on lots of wheels I was getting ready for box stock. Finally got consistent, smooth as glass results. I wanted to also produce some BASX cars so I prepped 4 sets of Jon's older BASX wheels and discovered 2 of the sets developed gouges and always towards the outer bore side. I was using the Walgreens swab stock and a new one every set. I happened to notice while doing one of the gouged sets, a piece of black plastic which was shaped and sized so that it looked like a remnant from the lathing process came out on the 3rd wheel in that set but I never saw it imbedded on the swab stock on the previous two wheels.
I am a premium member and heard a warning about lathed wheels and clearing them of debris before polishing. Is it enough to blow it out with an air compressor or do you need to use an undersized Tamiya swab or what is the best method? I still am not sure this explains my problem though. I know some have abandoned the swab stock but I thought if I rounded the crimp on the end and ran it through a junk wheel first I would remove the swab as the potential disrupter of the wheel bore.
Any insights to avoid destroying $24 sets of wheels would be appreciated,
Eric
