Guys
been awhile since I bought the axle polishing kit...
was still using one from a couple years ago... making supply last
BUT....just got my new kit and there is a change and I would like some input

old kits= sand paper grit went all the way to 50k (green paper), no leather strap
new kits= sand paper grit stops at 12k... and seems to be missing a few grit-stages in between the 12k, and has the leather strap

any reasoning? technique changes or advise ?

THANKS !!

My experience: The paper above 12,000, especially the 40M and 50M is made with a different process. I found that it actually slowed the axle down a microsecond (i.e 1000's). It seemed to leave a residue. Also, the strips I used lost their grit very quickly. I think the residue came from underneath the grit. So I tested 20M and 30M which you can buy from Canada. I found it didn't add anything, so I stopped at 12M. But I use Brasso on a leather strap after the 12,000, then Jig.

I would be interested if anyone else has a different experience.

After sanding I typically finish with a wheel polish found at the local parts store using a leather strap.

There are some polishes out there that leave a silicone base behind. Good? Bad? Some R&D with prove it out.
