My dad tossed me the kit and a pocket knife and said "Here, carve it!" I was eight an barely got the edges rounded over. He painted it Road Stripe Yellow and pushed the axles and wheels into it. It looked like a little bus. The car never made it to the end of the track. There was no double elimination, my dad didn't come and there was no other dad to help me, one half run and I was done. It took over 30 years to get another chance.
I think many parents say that the scout should build it themselves with no help from a parent or adult so they don't look/feel bad for not working on it. Above are the perfect examples of the value of working with the scout. I understand some parents don't have the time, skill or tools to teach their kids much about the build. But, they certainly can show their scout how to get it done anyways by reaching out for help. There's a lesson in that alone.
