DFW axle bend

What is the best way to cut a relief in the axle . I have put the axle in a dremel and used a file. I have had the file jump the groove and gouge the axle were the wheel rides resulting in a wrecked axle. It seems there were really hard spots in the axle that I could not cut through. This has happened more than once. I've also tried the axle in the dremel and using another dremel with a cut off wheel . Effective but you have to very carefull not to saw it in half or take so too much out so the axle breaks when bending it. Maybe if I had better eye sight and a steady hand I would have more success. Awe to be 20 again!

Is there a better way ?

The best way is to buy the pre-cut axles from DD4H. Or use a lathe which has everything locked into place. For those of us who do not have a lathe, get them from DD4H. They are done right and will not fail you!

If you have a drill press you can chuck the axle and set the distance so you can slide a small file on the press table to where you want the groove on the axle (the head of the axle will be below the press table).

I have ordered some from DD4H . I will also try the drill press . Sometimes it fun to screw around and do things myself . It usually ends in disaster, but it's still fun .

Hold the file with both hands and steady them against the dremel. Practice until you can get it without it jumping onto the other part of the axle. We've probably all done this. Also, be sure you're using the round file, if not you'll always break the axle because of the sharp cut. Only do your polishing after the cut.
