Algonquin for the"good land". Wayne's World
Our race is this weekend and I have now helped build a total of seven scout cars for all different boys. Yes that is 7 in one week. I have mostly asked the boys and their dads how to set up the cars. I know more than all of them and I know for a fact that 7 out of a total 22 in the pack that there will be no challenge to me. We are Webelos and have raced the longest and know the most. I have helped those who are less informed. But don't want to give up all the secrets yet, even though this Is our last year.

Wrong? No. When we won the Pack last year, our goal was met and so I put everything I'd learned out on the table. While it may end up with us not winning the Pack this year, I have hopes that it may help our pack sweep all the trophies at Districts. THAT would be awesome.

I will be building 3 cars tomorrow for a single mom of three boys, plus cutting two more cars for a similar mom. and I have a preacher from that same pack who might need help (ran into him by chance at work). I have a few years left in the pack with my boys but when we finish our last year I plan to unleash the knowledge and just work with people doing workshops and show them how it is done. Having taken the track record this year in the pack on the same track as used in the district race I kow we are at a good starting point. I just want to get some more stuff going on and maybe have a council race at some point.

I have enjoyed teaching the Webelos how to go faster . I have taken one underneath my wing and built him a screaming car . I hope. We'll see tomorrow??? My son will come in a close 2nd, I hope. We have taken trophy s every year inc 1st place and best in show last year, so it is time I help someone who hasn't got a trophy yet. Pass the knowledge on, I guess.

I helped 5-6 scouts and their dads the day of the race prior to registering thier cars. All of them couldn't even make it to the finish line. When I was done setting them up, the cars finished in the middle of the pack in their respective age groups. One finished forth in the group my son was in. My wife asked "what if they beat our son's car now that you helped them"? I didn't care what the result was with me helping them just as long as the kids car made it across the finish line.

When I was a scout as a kid, I built my first car by myself and it didn't make it to the finish line in competition and I was devistated and embarassed. I don't want any kid to feel like that after they had been so proud of thier car build. I'm glad to help and see the joy on thier faces.

I helped a parent/child in a very small way. Car was aweful. Zinc weight and no graphite. Had him glue coins to the rear (He wanted to place them in front). Added some Derby Dad graphite and the car came in second. Amazing what a little bit can do.

It's been my experience that you cant win for losing. Year before last I helped wit my sons car and 2 other scouts and at the Pack, the cars went 1,2,3. My son won at pack. MWD can vouch for this one, the day of the District, out of 96 cars, our cars went 1,2,3..with my son finishing 2nd. He showed alot of maturity as he was happy for the young man who won. Yet all I caught was crap..from 3rd and 1st place(moms) espicially 1st. So, no matter what, you do what you can and sometimes it just doesn't matter..the fact is only onw kid can take home first and if it ain't the right one, you're going to catch flack.

Rocket car - That is cool to hear about the 7 cars being in the top 10.... It is awesome to hear that there was some praise going on as well .....

I helped several at our check in night. Lot of weight tweaking and a few axle issues. The worst came in late right at the end. Car had been cut badley and wallowed out on side where axles connect. We had to add a bunch of weight - he had none - and reinstall the axles to make it wide enough to fit the track and make it across the line. Turns out he did great in his den and his smile was totally worth it. His parents thanked me after - dad had just gone through knee surgery and still recovering so the finish effort was just not an option for them at home. Win or lose, it's how we play with others. My Tiger asked why we were helping them, and then a few questions from me later figured out it was the right thing to do. I'm glad he won e pack, which was a total surprise, but even happier he learned about the value of helping others so they can have just as much fun as he did.
