I've asked our Pack Master 2 months ago for a set of "Pack" - Pinewood Derby Rules.
I caught him last night, and asked again... His answer was- Don't Cheat!
I told him when my Son's were in Scouts, I had to change the axels and wheels 5 minutes before the race, because they deemed the wheels, "too rounded".
He said don't worry about that... 5 oz. and under, and you're GOOD. (PERIOD.)
I asked about 3 wheels, and he said, "No, you need all 4 wheels... (I think.... Duh...)", "and they need to be BSA wheels only!"
Me-"O.K. What about one wheel lifted?"
Him- "Uh.... What do you mean?
Me-"Forget it, I need a set of rules, I don't want to do last minute changes."
Him- "We're not going to go anywhere, after this... No District, Council, Etc. You can race a BRICK, as far as I'm concerned."

O.K Guys, What would you do?
I don't even want to cut the block, until I see a set of rules.

I would try and bring it up at a "pack meeting" with other parents around.... if you get the same answer go ahead and build to the max that he said.... then if there is a chance once he sees you did not bring a brick to race and tries to say your illegal hopefully the other parents are there to help you case

i would build a rail runner using the slots get basx wheels 91 axles with the point, run oil and smoke them...,

I'd like to Mod it, in every way possible.
5 oz. with 4 wheels touching.
THEN... ???
(EDIT)
NOW- less than 2 months to build! 1/31/15 is the race.

I always build 2 cars at a time -- 1 for my son and 1 for me to race the adult class. This is good also because
if one brakes your son still has one to race. What ever you do make sure your son is a part of painting it with
his theme. You can also design a shipping label decal wrap for the car. My pack & Dist. are the same way. No one knows what the heck is going on and they don't have any idea. Most pack rules are so old and have so many loop holes in them
there is no way to tech the cars with any certainty.

The biggest thing I found out the hard way is DON'T talk about your car at the race. I was at are Dist. race the first year
(finished 45th out of 65 cars) and I was talking about are car and one Dad almost Beat Me up !!! At are pack race we
barely qualified for the Dist. race so we built a new car. The rule says all cars must be built that year. Says nothing
about running the same car. This guy from another pack was yelling and screaming. I am surprised that we are still
in scouts !!!

Build a BASX car and come race with us !!! We won are Dist. race last year by 2 feet with a time of 3.052. We have done
4 races now with NPWDRL and are down to 2.985XX.

Good Luck

Then bring in your own set of rules and ask the Pack to adopt them.

The easiest would be to simply adopt the BASX or Street Stock rules from here. We'll be glad to help you write them.

you can race a brick LOL
I would absolutely HAVE to hollow out a pre drilled full size block and paint it like a brick!

Is there a District or Council race? If so, I'd follow those guidelines, if your Cubmaster refuses to supply any.

O.K. Last night, Pack Master Jim brought up his sale of Pinewood Derby cars, and I yelled out from the back- "What are the rules?"
He responded, "Don't CHEAT!" (AGAIN!!!)
I'm done asking... I need advise- Pronto!
With no clear set of rules, what's LEGAL for BSA?
What would you do, to pass the non-rules, and make a FAST CAR?
I, ALMOST! want to race a BRICK... BUT!!! I'd like my G'Son to blow-away the competition, to the point, they accuse me of cheating!
I'm thinking sleek, 1/4 " sliver with tuned-up wheels, and axels, with a side of Turbo Boost/ Time Machine thrown in.
I just don't know, how FAR to go, when "They" pick it apart, and judge it ILLEGAL.
I'd like it - LEGAL....
BUT! "DON'T CHEAT" is wide open to interpretation. When no rules, are given.

For wheels Cheetah V3's http://www.shop.derbydad4hire.com/The-Dynasty-Cheetah-v3-set-of-4-wheels-W-DCHEE.html

or
BASX pro http://www.shop.derbydad4hire.com/The-Dynasty-BASX-PRO-set-of-4-wheels-W-BASXPRO.htm

Axles : http://www.shop.derbydad4hire.com/The-Dynasty-92X-Pro-Axle-with-BSA-Point-A-D92BSAG.htm

Also order the polishing kits and SILVER BULLET http://www.shop.derbydad4hire.com/The-Silver-Bullet-T-BLOCK.htm

I would run oil if possible. Another possibility is to buy the mid-America wheels and build the car to run in the Mid-America in April. You can proxy race the car and you guys can watch it run on the video feed on the internet. Last year we had a big party and hooked the laptop up to the TV. The adults loved it as much as the kids did. This year we are going to the race live .

I would go with a Plug N Play kit from Derby Dad For Hire, 92 axles, Cheetah 2 gram wheels, and 4 oz of 1/4" tungsten cubes.

Buy the axle and wheel polishing kit, the oil, and the Oil DVD and you will be good to go.

There is no setting of steer on the Plug and Play which will simplify things for you to have a fast and stable car.

Almost forgot, order some Salley Hansen Teflon Tough nail polish from Amazon. Search for it on this board and you can read all about it.

Good luck!

Halo, do you think your pack master is going with the rules that come in the box? Is there no one else in the pack that raced last year that could clue you in to what's allowed to pass as not cheating?

I'd probably build two cars, one per the box rules and one with every trick in the book. Run the tricked out car through check in first, if no one freaks out then don't even crack the box on the tame one.

F' that. I would be the pain in the arse and push back.
"How can I cheat if you dont have any rules?"
"Define cheating!"
"No. Seriously, what are the rules? Dodging the question with 'No cheating' is not helping."
Your district or council have a derby? Check their website for rules. If so email the link to your PM and ask if those are the rules you should follow so you dont cheat.

I did some digging based on your profile and these pack i believe is within your same counsil. Basically only light sanding wheels and no grooved axles. May need to keep the double step on the hub.

This one is for a district within your counsil and is more restrictive, not allowing canted axles.

Pointing out the differences in rules of each group to your PM may get him to caugh up a real answer too.

I would build a car and SMOKE THERE A**.. Buy a block from DD4hirr drilled get weight by a set of BASX. PRO WHEELS, 92 non grooved axles with point and 1 pre bent..put 4 gee fenders on and let it eat!! If they can't give u rules in writing.... Then there's no rules. With the items I gave to to buy u will be legal

Last night, I got a set of rules. 3 Months LATE!(2012 rules) (less than 3 weeks to build!)
3 wheels "touching"/1 lifted=O.K.
No Lightened wheels, but sanded flat= O.K./BUT! Not Lathed!!!, with BSA wheels (ONLY)
How do you "sand" a wheel flat, with-OUT lightening it??? How do you remove product, by sanding it off, without making it lighter??? (DOH!)
No bent axles. No "After-Market" Axles. BUT!!! You can "ROUND/TRUE" axles, as long as you don't "ROUND" the "HEAD" of the axle!!!??? (Excuse French) BUT! W.T.F. Does "Round" mean? if I'm not allowed to make "ROUND".
No Canted axles. BUT!(Quoting Rules!!!)- "If axles- ARE!!! CANTED!!!!!!!,(DERF!) wheels MUST remain flat, on surface." What happened to NO CANTED AXLES???
I'm done ranting, sorry, had to vent.
Rules are for losers! So they can call you a CHEAT!

HAHA!!! Thats funny. Welcome to the great forum full of "cheaters" hahahaha
Read lots and build well and you will do great! Best of Luck.

Thanks Chief,
I was trying to stick to the "Rules", but even the "Rules", don't know what the "Rules" state- in black and white.
My Grandson, "Halo Blu", (Yep. His real name.) Is doing his first Tiger Cub Pinewood Derby Car, and I thought it would be cool, if he stomped the Pack, right at the start.
Call it bragging rights, or whatever, but I thought a newby ought to Win it ALL!
I don't want to cheat, but these rules= SLOW CARS!

my boy won his first pinewood derby as a tiger... i can tell you this, you get some looks

if your here, read and build to the best you can from the info found here and you will have no problem running very well most likely take home the win
