I'd like to share a short story. 10 years ago my, now 18 year old, grandson asked me to help him build a pinewood derby car. I didn't even know what that was but after he told me I agreed to help. Unfortunately for him I knew absolutely nothing about the rules nor how to build the car but I figured I'd do my best. we cut out a nice, kind of aerodynamic, car, we put the wheels on as straight as I could after painting it with some flat green paint I had laying around and off to the races we went. Well needless to say we failed miserably. I felt terrible and I felt like I let him down. He let me keep the car, I think because it wasn't worth the wood it was made of. 3 years ago my, now 9 year old, grandson joined the cub scouts and I (Papa) got the opportunity to redeem myself in the derby races. I studied this time before starting his car. He won 1st place in his pack the first year he raced. The second year we made a few different cars and we built a practice, two lane track with a digital timer. He won 1st in his pack, 1st in an open division at another pack's race, 1st in the wolf division at districts and 2nd overall at districts. This being his third year he won 1st in his pack, 1st in the bear division at districts and 1st overall at districts. He feels like a champ and Papa eased his continence just a bit. We're ready to try something bigger but we don't have a clue what's out there. Does anyone have any suggestions of what races might be good for us rookies to try?

Race in the NPWDRL, either in Box Stock or BASX Amateur. The classes are designed for Cub Scout racers and new rookie league racers respectively.

When are the NPWDLR Races? I'm looking at their website but it seems a bit hard to find information. Is this like an actually league? How does it all work?

Congrats on the success!

Definitely think about joining us at NPWDRL. First-class league racing with some great fellas.

The main website gives all the pertinents, but the real fun is at the forum site Bulldog posted for you. See race videos, pictures, get tips from current racers, and ask questions.

There are a couple other leagues out there but most on this board are affiliated with NPWDRL and the occasional races that this site's owner hosts at his shop in North Carolina (see homepage for info)

Thank's Guys...I don't think i'm quite ready to compete in leagues but I am definitely thinking about it. You guys are hardcore racers, I don't think I'm ready to compete with you yet. A friend of mine who comes over to my place to work on his son's car wants to do the Omaha Nebraska race so I think we and our boys will build a couple cars for their open scout division....any advice would be greatly appreciated...does anyone know if fenders are allowed in that race? I was amazed at Bulldogs fenders and want to try that.

fenders are allowed and highly recommended... so are aero wheels shields...

That race is fun for the boys... If the boys get a chance to go live, it is worth the trip !

What are aero wheel shields? I think we will send our cars out this year but we were hoping to participate in person next year.

They fit inside the wheel to deflect air. Keeps air from getting inside the wheel cavity. for MA, they have to be clear so the inspectors can read inside the wheel.

At the risk of sounding too new and being a pain, are they allowed in the Cub Scout open division and what is MA? I don't want to send my grandson's car out there just to have it disqualified.

"MA" is Mid-America (the Omaha race).

Oh, Dah! Thank You Crash.

If the wheel shields are allowed in this division, plus fenders, I'm feeling pretty good about being able to win one of the trophies.
You guys are all awesome! Thanks guys!

I keep looking at the rules for the open Cub Scout graphite division and rule number four states that "all markings, inside and outside of wheels must be intact". So if I use the aero wheel shields how will they know if the inside markings are intact without taking our car apart?

For clear ones to fit conventionally mounted wheels, pm Hurricrane, for reversed wheels pm Gravity X. I understand that reversed wheels are not allowed in the scout classes at MA this year though?
