After a year off from cub scouts to due a change in schools, I'm back with both sons (Tiger and Bear). The older boy won his den as a tiger cub at the former pack, and this year each boy won his rank level race (we have two bear dens) and they went 1-2 overall in the pack (about 70 racers this year) - with my younger son coming in first.

All the tips and techniques that folks share on this board were very helpful in advising the boys on how to build quick cars. Thanks!

The older boy is now hard at work on his car for Districts - which is permitted during under the rules. The scout advances, not the car. He's not about to show up with a car he already knows is slower than his little brother's. It will be our first time at Districts, and it could be a fairly large event as the district has ~38 packs and they can each advance 5-6 cars (1 car per rank Lions-Webe AOL).

Hi Jeff H.,

Congratulations on your success! And glad you got a lot of help here, I did the same. And I hear you when you say your son isn't about to show up with a car slower than your younger son. My kids are the same way. My Tiger girl had a slightly faster than my AOL, and he was NOT happy (Along with a ton of other little boys who got beat by a younger girl, lol). My daughter ended up going to districts, my sun lost by a few thousands of a second and settle for first alternate.

Good luck at districts! We are gearing up for the districts ourselves. Early check-in is tonight, with the race tomorrow. Needless to say, we are excited. My daughter wanted to build a new car as well, as district rules are different than pack rules and we wanted to be competitive.

And WOW, that is a large district! Not sure how many packs are in ours, but surely it's not 38, And 5-6 cars, that's going to be a lot of cars! Wish we did 5-6, my son was 4th and would have been able to compete.

Finally figured out how many packs we have in our district. 20. So three cars each, that is 60 cars. That's smaller than our pack race. But sure the competition will be more.

Yeah, I’m trying to set expectations with my boys...they’ve put in lots of effort, but do will all the other kids at districts. It will be interesting to see how much higher the level of competition is...

Congrats on districts!

Our district race was an eye opener. Not because our district was very fast, but because of how well organized the OTHER district was that we were racing with.

We had a combined race with separated results. We were very good in ours and waxed overall.
