Inspect new parts

After polishing some axles tonight, I wanted to post a simple suggestion. Never assume the quality of your components, no matter the source. I've been a machinist for over 20 years and know from experience that even the best miss things now and then.

I was working on some new Jewkes 93's I had from last year and discovered 5 out of eight had some bad chip welding on the tapered side of the head. It was easy to correct, but if I found it after polishing, I would have been pissed. I always look axles (and wheel bores) over very good with a loop before starting.

They are one piece.

Chip weld typically happens when the cutting tool doesn't have sufficient cooling. Pieces of cutting chips soften from excessive heat and due to the pressure between the tool and workpiece, "weld" themselves to the machined surface.

The heads are welded on? Mine appear to be one piece.

Had a chatter in one of my cars last month turns out I had the same problem with the chip on the head.

The undercut was on these, just had what looks like bad galling on the tapered surface.

I don't know who's doing Johns BSA Extremes, but the few sets I've received this year look great...especially if you zinc plate the head/images/boards/smilies/wink.gif

Here's a perfect example. I hurriedly put a set of DW SSX's on a Street Pro I sent to CFC last month. I ASSUMED a wheel machined from Delrin round stock would be pretty true. When I was dissembling the car I noticed they were so out of round you could see it with the naked eye. I made an indicator fixture last week to check wheels and found them to be .005-.006" out! It uses pin gauges for the tightest fit possible in the bores.

Nice little tool there !!! Much more compact than what I am using. I agree though, never assume ...

How do you zinc plate the head? I would like to do this.

I try to support my fellow craftsmen whenever possible, but couldn't find anything out there that would be accurate enough for me/images/boards/smilies/wink.gif
