I would like to get started on some league racing (I like getting my butt kicked!/learning). In going through this forum I have seen the below leagues discussed, can anyone let me know if this list looks accurate:

-Pinewoodderbyracing.com
-NPWDRL
-Pinewoodderbychampionships.com
-APR
-PDDR

Any suggestions on where to start out (league/division), I would like to start with entering my son's scout car and do as little modifications as possible. (Standard wheelbase, graphite, wheels only trued/lightly sanded, no fenders-that was our choice not a rule). I would like to start with more oil/fender builds but just want to get started first.

Which of John's wheels are allowed for BASX, would it be the BASX only? Also are there any axle restrictions in that class?

I think I need to start a new build before sending it in as I would probably be at a big disadvantage with where I am starting at. Conveniently I am just started a car for our adult derby that would be slightly more competitive.

Any leagues that have stricter scout-like rules that we may be able to enter? I would love to enter his car closer to as is condition to see if we actually built something fast or if was just the level of competition. There is no where else to race his current car as we will need to build a new car for the NYC race as their rules are not consistent with ours. On a side note I get that NYC rules may not be ideal, but what surprises me is that our pack is in a district in NYC and our rules are different then the NYC race, which has the NYC council race.

I would suggest to start out in the BASX class. it is the easiest class to build. It's also the largest and most competitive class.

Thanks for the advice, can you let me know what wheels are OK to run in BASX? BASX/Predator 2.4

If my adult derby build seems to run well I will definitely enter it in. At least that gives me a starting point.

have similar rules for the classes. I think for the main classes like Street Stock, Pure Stock, BASX etc... the rules are the same.
I will also say this... a good fast scout/adult open class car for the most part will fall far short of the pros. There is serious speed to be found in these little beasties and the pros find it. I would suggest reading up on BASX and building a car and get help from the folks who race them every month. I remember how soundly our cars destroyed the competition at the Awana Grand Prix and then I see the speed of the Basico’s (BASX) over at APR where I race and it wasn’t even a fair comparison. With help I put together a Basico that would destroy our fastest derby cars. It’s a whole new level of racing but a level that is attainable with knowledge and some help getting there and as you have probably already found out the pros are quick to help us newbies out.
Pro league derby racing is about the coolest thing I’ve done in a long time. Highly recommended.

Jimmy thanks for the great advice, I will definitely start at the beginning and seek out advice as much as I can. I have read every post in this entire forum a few times, that doesn't mean I know what I am doing but it let's me know that there is alot i don't know yet. Learning will be fun though, I'm scrappy so hopefully I can keep the frustration down a slight bit.

I signed up for the npwdrl board a few days ago and I am waiting on approval to get access to there rules, if anyone has their most basic set of rules can you share?

Ok I guess that's my ignorance. I saw the rules for pinewoodderbyracing.com, I had thought that the NPWDRL was a seperste league. Thanks for the clarification.

NPWDRL is now a separate league. That’s Joel from Derby Evolution. Great site with products like John (here) and DerbyDad4Hire.com
You still need to read through NPWDRL’s rules to be sure there’s no difference if that’s the league you will be sending your car too.
I’d be surprised if there were any differences though. All 3 leagues have the same rules for BASX... I think. Can’t quote me on it.

I looked at the rules for the BASX/Basico for APR and BASX for pinewoodderbyracing.com and they seem the same to me. I will hunt down the right wheels and started a build tonight. I'm happy that there are no fenders. I want to get to the point where I can competently shape fenders but one step at a time.

With balsa being so easy to shape and also cheap it’s actully pretty fun doin fenders.
APR’s Feb race is actually in a couple hours. 11:00 am eastern time.
You should take a peek. Basico runs first followed by Box Stock. I have a couple cars running in these classes today. Race usually runs about 5-6 hours as they go through all the classes.

All the vendors sell pre cut balsa fender blanks too which saves the hassle of doing the radius too.

I have a 1” round file that I do radius with, hole saws work or even an old wheel with sandpaper glued to it on the drill press.

Door Slammers certainly look fun. They are also run at 6 oz instead of 5. Because yeah, they are flying bricks. That’s why most guys run Vette bodies... aero is better on them than most other bodies.
Today’s race is still going. My classes are already done. I am bummed because I want to race more. Lol.
I’m very happy with my newest build which was my Box Stock named “Here Goes Nothin’”. He finished mid-pack and at least didn’t get slaughtered!
