need some input on power supply for the start gate,I have the the gate from jukes and the power supply dosnt work it is listed out put 12v-2amps can I use a 12v with a higher amps maby around 5 or 6 amps?

In my way of thinking, whatever the start gate uses in amperage will be all that it uses. If it only requires 2 amps to operate it would only draw 2 amps from the 5-6 amps supply. But keep this in mind, with 5-6 amps available and there is any binding in the start gate it will try to use all the available amperage. There is only enough smoke in the system to let it out once and you don't want that to happen. Maybe Quadad or QT could chime in on this, as they did some nice work on Zeebzob's track before Nationals, regarding the power supply.

Jewkes is an electromagnetic release, isn't it? It's only going to draw what the coil needs, it'd be like putting an 850cca battery in place of a 650cca battery in your truck. It won't smoke the starter 'cause it'll only draw the amps to match the resistance at that voltage.

If nothing else, check the temp of the coil after a few cycles. If it's getting hot, stop!

thanx bunches guys I have a Colman 12v 5 amp power supply going to hook it up.the power supply that came with the starter was bad rite out of the box. dd4h has the same starter and I remember him saying he had to replace the power supply.
don't really have time to wait on a new one from Jewks.

If you are sure that there is nothing wrong with the solenoid release box, and only with the existing power supply, you are probably fine. If for some reason however, you had a fault in the electronics, the higher rated supply will do a better job of "letting the smoke out" /images/boards/smilies/tongue.gif.

How do you know that the power supply is dead ? Is there a light on the release box or something ? You should be able to check it with an inexpensive volt meter as long as you have probes that will fit in the power supply jack (assuming it has a jack and not a plug on the end). 12Vdc power supplies for small electronics almost always use a 2.1/5.5mm (ID/OD) jack. 24Vdc supplies more often use 2.5/5.5mm jacks. If you picked up some other PS that had a 2.5mm ID jack, it might fit over the pin and not make contact.

Any other specific questions, let me know.

IIRC, Jewkes has an led on the box to confirm it's live.

Nice display of Ohm's law bracket racer!!!!
ok
smile

Thanks! I'm no expert, but I can copy & paste like a mofo!

I like to view Ohm's Law like this: V = A/R and use this phrase to remember it. Victory(volts) over (=) Auto(amps)/Repair(resistance) Of course there are many other ways to remember this, but auto students remember this phrase the best.

thanx again guys

I tested the original power supply with volt meter it was dead right
out of the box!!

hooked up the one I had for Colman cooler 12 v 5amp every things working great.

thanx for the diagram B.K. but I thought that was Latin for your screwed LOL

well back to testing .

Hey g.o., didn't you say you have a Best Track? Did you do the Owens mod to your gate release?

I'm 99.99% sure he has not done that to his gate release. I will make sure he knows about this though as I'm sure he will want it done. Thanks a ton Bracket.
