I'm looking for some suggestions on a Miter saw, wife wants me to redo the trim around the house. I need to trim out some windows, baseboard, border molding, etc... Talk about a good reason to buy a new tool. I'm looking at a double compound sliding miter saw. Have any of you guys used any of these brands; Bosch, Milwaukee, DeWalt or anything else that you might suggest, 10" or 12" it doesn't matter. I don't want some cheapo inaccurate off brand saw, I'm looking for a good one.

...Now I can get started on a real nice tuning table... (rubbing hands and evil laughter, little does she know what she has done...) /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks for your input.

I have dewalt. Never had a problem with it. Now I use it just like what you said " Base boards,Trim,Crown molding." I built a stand for mine with alum. sides on it to help hold up longer stuff.

Surprised no mention of Makita- in my book they're king in the world of mitre saws.

imo the nicest saw is useless without a quality stand/table, i have a dewalt 12" miter only single compound (didnt come out with dbl until after i bought this one years ago) my stand cost almost as much as the saw

I have a Dewalt single bevel also. I highly recommend Dewalt's stand. My dad bought a Dewalt double bevel slider and an extra set of brackets to fit my stand so we both can use it. It's great not having to work on the floor! I picked up a set of clamps for doing crown moulding for my saw, with dad's you don't really need them since you can cut the crown moulding laying flat.
Oh, and buy a good blade for it so it doesn't splinter the ends.

Hey DC,

That stand looks great for mobility, but if it is staying put there is no reason not to make a stout table for it.

Hi Paul,

Makita and Milwakee seem to be in fashion with the contractors nowadays.

I just checked the price and those things are not cheap!

How much COMPOUND mitering you doing GX?

I am biased but a 10" contractors table saw will be able to do so much more for about that price.

It will probably end up being a little more work for the deck but the payoff will be on the other end.

Good luck with the deck

EDIT:

Paul,

Please ignore what I said about the table saw.

For a deck it would be too much work.

I don't think of those construction tools for precision, so anything off Craigslist is probably fine.

Bolt it to a counter and you are ready to rock.

no no reason at all why you couldn't make a permanent stand, i just like the mobility of it and how it compacts for storage when not using every day you can slide it under bench and then pull it out in a cpl min if you need it

I hear that DC,

Here in Manhattan space is at a premium.

It looks like a good stand.

When working on a deck it might be nice to keep the saw near the project, but if the purposed project is in the sun then a counter in the garage might be better.

One day I hope to have a garage to put a counter into.

Paul, you really need both a table saw AND a compound miter saw for the projects you listed. Do you need me to write a letter to Mrs. X for you?

Would you? I couldn't agree more... baby steps, baby steps.... though.

I have to finish out some odd sized openings so I'd have to rip some pine to get the right width I'm looking for. As long as the job gets done after purchasing the equipment it won't matter what I buy.

Thanks for all the great tips thus far. Keep them coming in. I thoroughly considered the folding bench for the miter saw, I don't like the notion of cutting all this wood crouching down over a power tool. I'd need it versatile enough to handle the table saw too. Or do I just need another bench? /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

With Most Any Tool The "Get WHat You Pay For" Saying Works, So Look AT Needs And Get The BesT The Budget(Wife) Allows If Need Be Wait To Buy In Long Run You WillBe Happy You Did

I MyselF Am Wanting A Nice Router Table, CanT Afford What I Want Now(1000) So Waiting

If you buy a contractor's or cabinet style saw you won't need to worry about another bench. If you want to buy a portable table saw there are plans available to build a larger work surface that the saw slides into to give you more support when you need it.

Hey DC,

I picked up this router table a few months ago and it seems to work OK for what I need.

http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-RA1181-Benchtop-Router-Table/dp/B000H12DQ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404231779&sr=8-1&keywords=bosch+router+table
The fence on the table saw is the thing I look for too.

The Unifence is my personal favorite with Biesmeyer coming in second.

The Sawstop looks like the highest quality saw around nowadays. It has a great dust collection system, throat plate (0 tolerance) and decent juice. Plus it is tough to cut yourself! It is a bit pricey though.

It is rare that I have had need of more than 1.5HP but when you use a 2hp motor you can get some nicer cuts on thicker plastic. I like having the 48" reach on my fence but for what I do I could probably get away with 36" and a circular saw for anything bigger.

The nicest part is that after getting the saw there are not a whole bunch of add ons to buy. Not like a lathe or a mill that has an endless list of tools and accessories.

Look what I just did!

Rushing to catch the game my push stick slipped off the piece I was cutting.

The piece came zipping by my shirt (for once I was glad not to be taller) and went thru the hollow door.

Only the materials I had stored inside kept it from continuing on.

The worst kick-back I ever had.

Wow, Bet That Woke You Up,Glad You Still Have All Fingers And Didn't Take The Hit That Door Did,

That's The Reason Its A Good Idea To Get In Habit Standing Just Off Center Whrn Using Table saw
